Has anyone tried the Pimsleur Approach?
« on: September 14, 2012, 05:10:32 pm »
It's a language learning program that I have been trying. It's the one where it claims that you can learn the basics of a language in just 10 short days. As for me I really like it so far. It was only 10 bucks to buy and if you continue then you can get more materials so you can become fluent (which costs extra). And just to let everyone know, it is NOT an offer on Fusioncash. I don't want anyone to get confused. :p

I don't think it would work, to be honest.  Languages are best learned by immersion - speaking only that language.  When I studied ancient greek and hebrew, it was easily 4 hours a night of studying.

Check out the Barry Farber book (Google it and go to Amazon) he used the Pimsleur approach. The short title is, "How to Learn Any Language:" And he will save you a lot of money. Plus he has lots of other information for you. He believes in the traditional methods but on another timeline. Children don't  spend all their time learning grammar until age six. With his book I would not have spent four years not learning to speak French in school. You can then borrow CD's from the library or get them almost anywhere else. I have a DVD similar to the very costly computer based language company we all see advertised. If you have the cash keep buying from the Pimsleur people. I have been burned by another company, because I did not open the package right away and read the small print. Who can debate immersion but we can't all move to say Italy the way my dad did. Or have lots of time for just one subject.

I've tried several different of these "methods", and I still like the Rosetta Stone ones the best. I've done French, Spanish, Russian, and Mandarin so far, and it's all been pretty easy to pick up. They aren't very expensive, either, which is always a huge plus. There are a few programs on iTunes for free (or cheap) that can aid in language learning, as well, which I highly suggest for anyone trying to learn a new language and find themselves struggling.
