I am a  mother and have a son whom I love dearly but I expect him to put his wife above me.  That being said, it must work both ways and she should just as selflessly put him first.  There is a quote by Presdient Gordon B Hinckley that is good advice and certainly works both ways:  "I am satisfied that happiness in marriage is not so much a matter of romance as it is an anxious concern for the comfort and well-being of one’s companion.   there is no special woman in my life. basically iam soured on women. i was married twice both of them cheated on me. my last wife i adored. i gave her everything she ever asked for and still she strayed. my mother i have asked her twice in my entire adult life and she turned me down so lhave no use for her at all

Women who act like #2 should not expect to be treated as if they were #1.  The same goes for men.  Women, (or men), who comport themselves otherwise should be treated otherwise but, are often not.
