Unemployment
« on: August 25, 2012, 11:34:25 am »
As I watch so many qualified individuals take pink slips and head to the nearest unemployment office I can't help but be concerned about the condition of our workforce. I can't speak for residents of other states, but here in Georgia it is no longer about what you know. You are qualified for a position based on your relationship with a specific person or persons  employed with the agency or company. Unemployment is at an all time high. But the facts aren't being considered. How can we help the unemployment rate? The employers are allowing nepotism to destroy the workforce. People with four year degrees are loosing their jobs simply because they are not directly related to the boss. It's sad that you can get laid off simply because you're not willing to be friends with the people responsible for the hiring within a specific company. There really should be more laws in place to protect the workforce. Some of us that live in States like Georgia in which workers rights aren't enforced are really suffering.

I've noticed that, too, since we've moved there.  It's who you know, and who has money, and if you are an "outsider" moved in from elsewhere, then you might as well forget having a chance at the more qualified jobs worthy of a degree.  It's definitely not right.

I think it's like that all over, not just in Georgia. I know it's true in NY state too.. The employers know that jobs are scarce in this economy, so they think they can get away with it. you're right, there should be laws in place to stop that unethical and unfair behavior. But since big money runs the companies and the government, there's little chance of that happening. It's always the little guy that gets hurt, even though we're the ones that actually work to make all the money for the big wigs.
