i know my moms dog whine when he was a puppy and she put in a night light for him and it helped a lot. also try putting food and water next to the puppy and toys.

we have a 9 month old Weimeraner and that puppy sleeps just fine at night for the most part. We started her in a kennel with a sheet overtop most of it and then let her sleep in the same area without the kennel and she knows to lay down on that spot (we now use a rug to show the spot).

when my Shadow was a puppy and cried at night, I just let her snuggle in my bed.  She eventually grew up and took over my bed (pillow and blanket too) so that probably wasn't the best advice for ya...but...I sure do miss  my Shadow "bed-hogging".
Dogs are "pack" animals and enjoy company vs. being left alone.  They can be trained to sleep off by themselves but they'd prefer not to.  It can have it's benefits as some pet parents can't sleep as well as they should if the pet keeps waking them up all night.  I though, never would get any sleep if I had to have the pets off sleeping in another room because I'd be worried if they were ok or if they needed me.  I used to sleep with the bedroom door shut on one of my cats and I found her dead one morning.  If I had had my door open, she would have been able to let me know that she needed help.
