A lady I send reports to every month said that Microsoft Works doesn't send PDF files with attachments.
She wasn't able to open the document attachments.

Not sure what you are mentioning?  Are you wondering how to create a pdf file?  In most cases, people need adobe to read pdf files.  It is a free download.

I agree, if you don't have Adobe Reader you will not be able to open PDF files.

Adobe Reader is only for the sheep that follow along in a line and use what came on their computer. That's the first thing I uninstall right after Norton or McAfee and download and install Foxit Reader for free. It's 10 times faster and takes up a fraction of the space.

Does it work automatically, and open up the files just by double-clicking, or do you have to jump through hoops like right-clicking, and select "open with...", etc. That's why I usually leave all the default programs on my computer, because I don't like chasing down programs every time I want to open a file or view something.

Silly, you can always change the default applications on your computer.  If the program doesn't ask you when you install it if you want to make it default, then just do Open With... and check the "Always use this program" box.
I'm sorry if my recondite verbiage is a little difficult to understand sometimes.  Using fancy vocabulary really is fun, you should try it!

That's if the computer recognizes it as a program to open that kind of file. For some types of files, certain programs don't even show up on the list! PDF is common, so it should be OK, but I don't know. That's why I wanted to ask before I download something new.

What you are talking about is "file associations" and can be edited in Windows (search for a tutorial if you want to learn how). If you use Add/Remove Programs to get rid of Adobe Reader (frees up space), but not the other Adobe applications like Flash, then install Foxit Reader, it will establish the associations automatically and it will work correctly when you double click any PDF file.

I used to use Foxit (and some other non-adobe readers) but they were ALL buggy, crashy and memory hogs for me (not sure why).

The solution is called PDF.js - it's a firefox extension that can render almost any PDF natively in your browser using only javascript.  No separate software, no automatic start on boot... it Just Works.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/pdfjs/
You don't even have to restart firefox to use it.  Chrome already has native PDF rendering so with that and PDF.js I am covered!

Meh. It's not that deep. Sometimes it's just a matter of "if it aint broke, don't fix it". I don't have many problems with adobe products in general so I have no need to replace them. I get rid of Norton or McAfee for something lighter and more effective, well, because they're lighter and more effective not simply because they come with the computer or are well known.

I stopped using Explorer because it stunk, not because it seems to be the thing to do. Funny enough though, I'm using it right now until I straighten out why I can't log into the forum through Chrome and Firefox.
