I despise rap music. Will not listen to it or even watch the videos for 1 penny. You can't pay me enough to listen to this mess. Do you like it? Please tell me why if you do.

I agree with you.  In my opinion, rap really isn't a song.  It is speaking ( and sometimes in a derogatory manner ) to music playing in the background.  To me, it sounds more like noise.  I can be very angry, and ends up giving me a headache.

However, there has been one song that I heard that had a mixture of song and rap in with it.  The rap part was tasteful.  It wasn't yelling, it was more soothing and had singing  and neat music playing in the backgroud.  The song was actually made up from two groups.  I actually heard it on a Christian radio station.  It was the only one that I have ever heard that I actually like.  :)

It depends on the context.  I agree that mainstream rap has sort of devolved into a meaningless conundrum of offensive phrases and derogatory remarks. It's mostly about sex and women. I learned to sort of despise rap early on because of this.  However, when I started listening to true hip hop and rap, it's a different story.

By this, I mean rap that stimulates your mind and brain.  For example, if you listen to Nujabes mixed in with Shing02 or Cise Star, it's incredibly soothing and intellectual.  To me, real rap is the kind that forces you to rethink the environment around you, to actually use your mind and appreciate the world.  The mainstream rap primarily goes for beats and while that's fine, sometimes ignores the substance of rap as a whole.

I do like Lupe Fiasco though since his songs are fairly though-provoking. Long winded response, but I genuinely believe that rap, like music in general, can be an art form if crafted correctly.

I like some rap - it depends on the music they're rapping to and most importantly, what they are saying. Many people say it is just speaking but it is a talent and not everyone can do it. I don't like any song, rap or otherwise, that talks about getting drunk, s*x, or uses offensive language. Like all genres there is good and bad out there. And I'm a 49 y/o white woman so I did not grow up with it - just kept hearing it from kids, LOL

I just cannot wrap my head around this rap thing......I've tried very hard to really listen to it, but to me it's just a lot of noise with someone speaking so fast that I cannot even understand what they're saying.  ???

I listen to some Christian rap songs but other than that I think rap is trash. Too much unnecesary profanity and degrading of women :/

LOL!!! Thanks vp44!!! People are entitled to their own preference of music genres. You say that rap  is too loud and is  just alot of noise but i can say the same thing about rock music. If you don't like it just don't listen to it.

rap music yeaaa i truly like the way one has to figure out exactly what the message is- for instance rapper freeway "goodbye" raps about 'the block'; however, some of the words describes a relationship with a female but that isn't the case. at least, that's what i believe. what is that called? analogy, synonym, metaphor? i know its;s not a hyperbole.

Rap music hasn't always been degrading, I think it started getting crazy in the late 80s.  I used to listen it but grew out of it because mainstream is terrible.

It depends on the context.  I agree that mainstream rap has sort of devolved into a meaningless conundrum of offensive phrases and derogatory remarks. It's mostly about sex and women. I love the soundtracks from 'Samurai Champloo', I wish the anime would come back.

My older brother listened to rap when it exploded in the early to mid 90s, so I grew up around it  Rappers I remember include De La Soul, Brand Nubian, The Jungle Brothers, The Geto Boys, Slick, etc.  Like many impressionable white kids I turned to Tupac, Mobb Deep, Westside Connection, Snoop Dog, Wu Tang Clan, etc later.  While I don't listen to rap as much as I used to, I still appreciate it.  I like rappers like Common, The Roots, The Last Emperor, Nas, Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Childish Gambino (Donald Glover), Kid Cudi, and Lil B.  I have a fairly eclectic taste in music as there can't be a lot of people with Weezer, Down, Kris Kristofferson, Sepultura, Drake, Wiz Khalifah, Masta Ace, and the Velvet Underground on their MP3 players.

I like rap music. Just not the mainstream ones. Can't really stand them. LOL. Best rap is underground rap where they talk about real life situation and have a positive message in them or rap from the 90's and earlier. But not all rap music is bad.

You've listed a bunch of great rap artists!!   ;)

I prefer neo soul, but I do like some rap, especially if I'm in a club setting with friends or working out.  People who like rap like it for the same reason you like whatever music you like; relatable content, a good beat, and reputable artists.  I don't like ANY music that is disrespectful or vulgar and unfortunately that's what rap has been recognized as, which is not always true.
