I always change oil at 3,000 or a little over, but I know my car needs good lubrication to keep it running smoothly.

Every 7500 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first, using a synthetic blend oil.

Just follow your manufacturer's recommended service interval for your model and type of oil to use.  If it says 5,000 miles or 6 months, changing it every 3,000 or 3 months is just wasteful... not just with money, but also resources.  Service departments are one of the bigger money makers for dealerships.  If they could get you to come in every 1,000 miles to change oil, don't you think they would?  There are many reputable, honest service places, but the truth is, there are many which prey on the uninformed to boost their bottom lines.

I agree that it's best to change at the recommended interval from the manufacturer and not from the service station. They are the ones that have done the research as to what works best for the type of car you are driving. Actually, some research has found out that by bringing in your car too soon can actually be harmful too in that by opening up the oil system, there's a possibility for contaminates to get inside. Thus (esp. for very new cars) it's actually better to go to 5K miles or even longer. As your car ages, then consider getting the oil changed more often, or switch to a synthetic (or semi-synthetic).

I'm very good about getting it done every 5K miles (or shortly thereafter). I also rotate my tires every other oil change. I learned the hard way about not rotating my tires with my first car. Within a few years, the tires started making noise and eventually I had to get them replaced even though had I rotated them on a regular basis, I could've gotten by with the same tires for longer.

Also if anyone gets extended warranty on their cars, make sure you read the fine print. I know on mine, I am required to take my car in for regular maintenance and retain proof of it. At any point I bring in my car to be serviced at the dealership, they could request proof of regular maintenance, and if I cannot produce it, they could drop my extended warranty. And I can understand their rationale... If you are getting covered for engine damage, then they should know that the damage wasn't caused by your neglect in not changing your oil on a regular basis.

I get mine changed between 10k and 12k miles.  10k is recommended by the manufacturer (it's synthetic oil) but I tend to forget until the oil light comes on.

I believe in maintaining a car but I think that an engine can go a little further than three thousand miles.  I think that there are a lot of shiceters out there who will try to con you into getting services that aren't really necessary.  I have found a garage that I trust.  If I ask them whether I need maintenance they will tell me no if I don't...they aren't trying to extract every cent out of my wallet. I have gone to other servicers who have charged me and not changed my oil. I had another servicer that didn't put my oil cap back...hello blown engine!

Yep, every 5,000 miles.  Preventative maintenance is worth it.

I don't, and my husband used to work at AutoZone and my dad's a mechanic so I should know better.  I'm about to sell the truck I have now and when I get my next one I'll try to do better.

Always, i want my car too last as long as i own it.. Always check my tires too.
checking your tires is important as well, not just for fuel economy, but if you drive with your tires under or over inflated, you can damage them, and even the smallest, cheapest tires will put you back a few hundred bucks--no sense in buying them when you don't need too.

I have them done about every 5000 miles.  Finding the time is the hardest thing.
