You could leave him on the cage when you are not home, my dog did that too, I went and bought her bones , It entertained her and helped to pull her away from the rest of the house.  But I have heard that certain breeds are worse than others.

Go to Walmart, or petsmart and look for the raw hide bones like Rawhide Braids or knots, busybones or busy rollhides, they come in different flavors and some of them are big enough for them to get caught for hours and are wonderful for their teeth, keeps them strong and healthy

Good luck and for now just make sure to keep the most inportant items, like homework, shoes, plants and or baskets away from him, and if he is anything like mine socks too, mine loves socks and hides them when we leave them hanging around.

We recently got a beagle in Nov11 and She does the same thing, shoes, pillows, bedspreads, tissues It doesn't matter to her what she chews. Someone put us on to Nature's Miracle "NO-CHEW", you can get it in petsmart and Wal-mart and it works. It has a bitter taste that the dog does not like but, it will not stain the furniture or any household items. I don't even smell it and I have a good sense of smell.

Don’t leave anything lying around on the floor where your puppy can access its teeth into. This is the time to enroll your puppy in obedience training if you haven’t done so already.  :dog:

Yes, can't agree more. All your puppy needs now is some training, and may be a chew toy bone.

I'm glad my dog is grown and does not chew everything, I remember giving her dental bones so at least she was cleaning her teeth while chewing....

Good advice given so far.  You need to deter the chewing to other objects they are allowed to chew.  It may be a time consuming chore to do, but the dog needs to learn ASAP.

When I was a child, one of our family's dogs was a chewer when he was young.  My parents tried everything.  The vet finally recommended dashing a few drops of Tobasco sauce on things you didn't want chewed.  It worked wonders.  You obviously can't put it on pillows, tissues, or anything which might stain.  But, for other items, it's worth a try and is CHEAP.

You might also want to search some of Cesar Milan's Dog Whisperer episodes.  I recall watching a couple episodes where he dealt with dogs chewing up things.  Most every episode involved not only teaching the dog to behave, but teaching the owners how to assert themselves as a "pack leader".  Dogs are pack animals by nature.  Humans tend to make the mistake of treating a dog more like a child which can lead to the dog becoming the "pack leader".

Some tricks I recall him doing to assert himself would be taking ownership of the items being chewed.  He'd do that by simply standing over the items, blocking the dog from getting there.  Then allowing the dog access to the items that were good.  May be trickier with a puppy, but might be worth a try.

Distraction was also another technique he used - something to get the dog's mind off of the item.  A quick shout to distract them, then quickly redirect them to something else; or if they are not paying attention, a light tap to their flank.  Anything to break their concentration and then they "listen" to your direction.

But just like a toddler - you need to be consistent in application of discipline or the dog will fall back into old habits.

Good luck!
