Pets passing away

Today, our dog, Tigger, passed away. We chose to bury him in our own back yard rather than have him cremated. Two of my sons and husband dug the grave. Then, we had a funeral and filled in the hole. I think it was therapeutic for my sons to help bury Tigger.

I wonder what other people have done with their pets that passed away at home.

We had a ferral cat that finallly decided she liked us and came inside.  She was so sweet and followed my husband everywhere he went,  Shortly before Thanksgiving, she quit eating and we had to have her put down right after Thanksgiving.  We figured it would be too hard to dig that time of year so we had her cremated.  We still miss her but we started volunteering at a cat shelter and really enjoy it.

I've heard you aren't supposed to bury animals in the yard....environmental things, but I'd just assume do that then spend the money to do anything else....it would be nice to have a funeral.  We haven't lost a pet yet.  Sorry for your loss.

When we lost our pets, we bury and planted flowers on top.  It is hard to when you lose a pet because it's like losing a family member.  So sorry for your lost.

I'm sorry for your loss. I never had a pet but 2 of my friends' dogs died a few weeks apart. One of my friends took their dog to the vet to have it disposed of. My other friend buried her dog in the backyard.

I'm really sorry for your loss.  Pets are wonderful companions, friends, and just plain part of the family.  When our kids were young, we would do the same with burying - they were the ones who actually wanted to do it that way, so we would go through a "brief ceremony" with them there.  I guess it was a closure process for them, too.

I've heard you're not supposed to bury them in the yard, too, but I still do that.  I live on 20 acres, so I don't see the harm in it.  Sorry for your loss, I know how hard it is.

my cockatiel died when i was babysitting a friends daughter and she seen my bird walking on the floor and normally she likes to walk or follow you and the lil gilr stepped on him and broke his neck i so rushed her to vet but nothing they could do..i was so sad and then the mom didnt try to say sry cause i guess a bird is really not a pet to them but hey my birdie used to sit on edge of my bed and watch tv with me.

Its always sad to lose a pet. I missed my dog..... We took him to the Vet and had her cremated.

We lost our little guy (Bear) a year ago in March while we were in Florida, my husband found a beautiful tree by a lake in a wildlife refuge that we knew would never be developed on and he buried him there, we live in Florida thru the winter months so we can go and sit by the tree when we want. I miss my lil guy so much, and I haven't gotten another dog, for I know there will never be another like him.

Whether buried or cremated, closure is what counts.  Plus, a nice photo on display in your living room will ensure your little critter remains in memories for years to come.

I am sorry to hear that so many pets have passed away. A pet can be wonderful companion and a lifelong friend. my dog passed away last year after she became ill. She was my best friend and will always carry her with me. We buried her in our backyard. My husband dug the grave and we all helped in the burial.
