is it true that if you crush a can it weighs more?

I can't imagine that this would be a true statement.  It is kind of like asking which weighs more...a pound of feathers or a pound of gold?  They both weigh the same. I think that crushing a can makes it much more convenient, when gathering thousands, to transport to their final destination.  I have been recycling cans for about thirty nine years and don't believe that crushing a can wll make it weigh more.  I do believe that recycling cans is a good way to help the environment and make a few dollars at the same time.

Wow, I never thought about this but a crushed can would not blow away like an empty can full of air right?

Answer is no.  But several people think it helps because the one trash bags of cans now weighs more.  (They didn't account for the fact that crushing the cans allowed for more cans to be in one bag.)
Some states or cities do not take cans if they are crushed.  This is because previous customers abused that option by putting sand or water in the cans.  They def weigh more when you add to them :)

It still weighs the same.  That doesn't make any sense.  But then again, science was always my worst subject!

They will weigh the same.  Crush them and you at least save some space.  Wash them out first too... old rotten beer, juice, and soda smell terribly in the summer.

Yes, if you collect more of them after you crush them. It just takes a little longer to fill a trash bag up with them when they are crushed, you know, like 4 bags of uncrushed cans would fill one bag about half way. The more the merrier.

I highly doubt compressing it would make it weigh more unless there's still some liquid inside. It would make the size convenient, but it would not add weight if compressed.

You can carry more cans in the same space is the only reason you can make more money from it but like others have said you have to check the policies for the place you take them in order to make sure you can get money from them if you crush them yourself. This option makes the most sense if you have lots of cans and live far away from the recycling center otherwise it probably won't save you that much time or hassle.

LOL, I don't think it will weigh more. What I found out is that they deduct weight to the total weight of your cans, claiming the few drops of liquid staying behind inside the cans...LOL , My car garage was full of cans, we got $49, and they deduct 3 pounds from total weight.  :angry7: :BangHead: next time put dirt inside the cans LOL!

No...crushed cans allow more room in the bag/bin/box for more cans!

I recycle at the recycling vending machine. We can only redeem by piece count. I’m not sure if we can do it by weight. Crushing the cans may not be recommended. The machine will reject the aluminum can/ plastic bottle if they are badly bent out of shape. They can only be handed to the attendant if the condition is acceptable.
