You place an order online and charge it to your credit card.
you are told it is unavailable until "next month".
do you pay ahead of time anyway when you initially order an item?
Or do you wait until the company notifies you that it is available, then pay for it?

The company you ordered it from should not charge you until the item is released for delivery to you.

I wouldn't like it if they took my money before the item was available.  I'd cancel and try another time or place.

I guess it depends on the item and the company you are buying it from. If I had previous experience with the company, I would probably just go ahead and order it if I didn't need until next month.

I used to work for an eCommerce company. From my experience you will receive notification of an item on backorder or you can have the option to choose another item of similar value. As a consumer, if you do not wish to wait for the item you can request to cancel it and have the funds be credited back to your account. Make sure that you receive an email notification for that canceled item for your own record. If you're still experiencing some problems, try to reach the customer service number located at their website.
