Once you get the hang of the clutch, the brakes, and the feel of the bike, riding is rather easy. Now, the experience you need to actually ride on the road is a completely different story. Please have him take a class!!! I know my college has a semester long course that teaches all of the safety basics and has riding practice in the parking lot. It'll really help him and help protect everyone else from a potentially dangerous newbie on the road.

I raced motorcycles in my younger days and spend a few days in the hospital from riding in traffic too. It's not if you will get hurt, it's when. No matter how good you get, there is always some clown out there that will catch you off guard with his 3,000 pound car. I was thankful none of my 5 boys ever took it up, but if they would have wanted to I would make them ride in the dirt for starters.

I agree with "Old Buddy." I had one in college and I wrecked it twice. I was lucky. I have never had one since. I know they are a lot of fun but you WILL wreck one day. At least take the class so you have some defense. Good luck. :)

In nd you have to go through a driver instructor class before you can get a license. Good thing cause there are enough accidents.

I learned on a clunky old Honda 125CC motorcycle.  I didn't need to worry about dumping the bike.  Once I got good enough I took my driver's test on a Ninja.  Laws in Wisconsin were tiered: If you passed on a 125CC you could ride that size and under, passing on a 450 allowed you to ride any size under 450, and I chose to take my test on one of the bigges bikes so that I could have all access.  I eventually got a VMax which was the most powerful motorcycle made at the time.  I sold it three months later because I drove recklessly and realized I would probably kill myself with that much power.  My goal is to get a Hayabusa...soon.

A safety class couldn't possibly hurt if he is willing.  Unfortunately other drivers are what you have to watch out for.  Safer on parkways than busy interchanges.
