IF YOUR BACK HURTS WHILE GARDENING, DOING DISHES, ECT
« on: April 03, 2012, 07:16:20 pm »
Should you relax or take it like a man..I'm wondering if you don't take time to relax when experiencing back pain if it will bite you in the butt later in life.  Gardening and doing dishes are the two activities that bring back pain upon me...does anyone know of an article I could read on the matter?

If you 'take it like a man' you would be resting watching whatever sport was in season with a beer in your hand. You'd also be ready to yell 'honey bring me another beer'. You wouldn't be worried about gardening or the dishes. :P

Take an anti-inflammatory drug that you get without a prescription such as naproxen or ibuprofen. I prefer naproxen and take 2 as a dose (that gets you close to the prescription dosage). Rest more and apply hot or cold on your back which ever feels best (can switch off hot and cold too). Hope that helps.

A chiropractor can be a help for back pain but can also make it worse. They should take x-rays before manipulating your back to be sure there is no break in the area,

I try not to take medicine unless I absolutely have to.  I feel like I want my body or myself to fix the problem...say by relaxing...the dishes can wait but I'm wondering about if I should relax or if it's okay to work through it, or if that's unhealthy.

After working for a chiropractor for 6 years I've seen all types of back pain. I absolutely agree with you about avoiding otc meds for the pain. One it does somewhat pollute you body but the biggest problem is that when the meds ease the pain, people typically start being active again then aggrevate the area. You are hurting for a reason, take it easy.
Best tip for back pain: ICE (never heat!). Ice your back 20 minutes on then 10 minutes off a few times in a row.
Chiropractors are fabulous and responsible. If the DC does not want to take x-rays before adjusting you then run the other way!

Pain is your body's way of telling you something isn't quite right.  You need to listen to your body or it might make things worse.

Perhaps you should stretch before doing those activities.

BK, You were pregnant with your 2nd not that long ago. You also have a toddler. Both require you to pick them up and also hold/carry them every single day, yes? You also work, keep the entire house clean and running on your own, and do a thousand things a day without considering the fact that they use back muscles too. Small wonder that your back would be bothering you. ;) The best thing you can do, for a lifelong preventive measure to protect your back, is to strengthen all your core muscles. Taking even 15 minutes out of your day to excercise and strengthen your core can/will help tremendously and if you can find more time on certain days, all the better.
You are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.
