interesting fact about the moon

I was talking with a gentleman at breakfast this morning who used to be a farmer.
He said that one indication for rain is the poition of the moon.
When the moon's curve is on top and the opening is on the bottom, that indicates rain.

could this be because the clouds are lower in the atmosphere,
which are covering up the moon's bottom?

An interesting fact about the moon that I was so not aware of until I paid a visit to the McDonald observatory which is in no relation to the one with the golden arches.  Was the every night we shoot the moon with a laser to a mirror left by one of the Apollo moon missions which bounces the beam of light back and by calculating the time it takes to get there and back they measure the distance between the earth and the moon.
