Does anyone get annoyed with words that are spelled incorrectly?

I feel your pain!  However, I don't expect to see much of an improvement in the grammar and spelling of the younger generation any time soon, as literacy in America has gone down the toilet.  When I was a kid, we diagrammed sentences and drilled sentence structure.  Our handwriting skills were put through rigorous exercises to the detriment of my poor calloused fingers.  Spelling mattered from the very first day I started school.  Now, imaginary spellings and phonological attempts are lauded, and our poor little Kindergarteners and First Graders are learning to write whatever makes sense to them, with little to correct them.  I know this after spending a lot of time in a classroom.  So, vent here if you need to, but do not expect them to take what you say to heart, since their teachers did not expect any more out of them...

I don't see what the big deal is........Maybe some people just cant spell very well. Do illiterate people annoy you to? 

That depends; somehow, a person who declares that they're "a highly-skilleded noo-clee-air tecknishun whose fixin' ta git ready to push this hare red button marked 'lunch'" doesn't instill a whole lot of confidence in them.

Or a brain surgeon     lol It would be great to know they can read.

No, but I did hear about the dyslexic, agnostic, insomniac who spent his nights lying awake wondering whether or not there was a 'dog'.

As a moderate dyslexic myself ["Dyslexics of the world untie!"  ], I do my best to try to use correct spelling, but I know I make mistakes.  I use Google to get a hit on a dictionary entry whenever I get the red squiggly line, and if I cannot find one, I'll substitute a synonym I can spell.  My typical error is omitting articles, particularly when I'm typing fast or am tired.  So I apologize for any past, present and future misspellings.

I don't mind some of the entries where the sentence structure is not perfect.  I've learned a few foreign languages and typically can tell if the post is made by someone where English is their second language as there is a distinct grammatical structure that parallels some of the languages I've encountered.  I can make sense of those due to knowing how the foreign language sentence structure works and can understand what the individual was attempting to communicate.

My personal pet peeve are posts written mainly in "text speak".  The use of occasional common short cuts, such as "lol" or "rofl" or "imo", I don't mind.  It's the ones where the bulk of the post is all in this type of syntax.  To me, most of those posts are like deciphering a coded message.  Many I am unable to decode so I end up skipping the post altogether.

I have to say it is irritating....however in today's world everyone is in a hurry and no time for double checking error's.....I also believe it depends on what you are writing if it is here who cares!....a paper for school big difference.....I just think we have more things to get upset about or irritated with....and if the person who makes the mistake doesn't care why should we.....But it does speak for your character and how you present yourself at least that's my two cents!

I do get somewhat irritated with poor spelling but I don't believe public schools teach much of anything that they should anymore.  The winners of the national spelling bee mostly come from private schools where kids are taught worthwhile subjects.

I hate when I incorrectly spell something.  Though I will be the first to admit that I do so, probably more often than I realize it.  Certainly I am not great at re-reading what I am typing.  Then I'm so more likely to re word my meaning than to look up a word.  Often I find that I spelled the word correctly, just second guessed myself to a point that I wasn't comfortable posting it.  LOL  Overall, this is a chat room.  Don't expect great things

It may be that more than a few are using their 'smartphones' to not only text but, to reply to online forums, (continuing to use what they're used to, likely). Others merely convey impatience, (not with others but, with giving the impression that a lack of grammar indicates other lacks).

People making spelling and or grammar mistakes on the web is bound to happen. I know personally I try to not make spelling mistakes, but I tend to type fast and letters in words will get mixed up. I.e. Like will come out as liek. It's become somewhat of a joke with a friend of mine where when he does it he'll go "Urgh I've been talking to you for too long I'm starting to type like you!"

Yes I get annoyed with miss spelled words.  People miss spell my name all the time I hate it. Dictionary or internet . Spell right.

I think there are places for proper grammar and speech and there are places that can live without it. Certainly internet forums, chat and text messages are casual in nature and as a result the grammar and spelling are lax. Now if you were to send in an application, submit a prestigious article or write a novel I really hope the person is doing their research correctly and proofreading before it is published or read. The beauty of language is that it is always changing and those that stick to strict rules will be left in the past. There is no reason to criticize others about grammar and spelling unless it is completely illegible or it is your job to do so and in that case keep that mentality for your job, not your free time. And if it still bothers you, you are free to leave the forum at any time.
