Try to find out about the neighbors your going to have to live next to them. And also find out how noisy it is.

First of all if you don't want noise ask for a top floor, but then you have to worry about making noise. Make sure if you are tall and like to take baths that you can fit in the tub, alot of them are undersized. Check and see what is gas and electric, gas is cheaper for you but apartments tend to do electric because their is less of a chance of something going wrong. If you have a pet do they have a walking area, because when its cold you won't want to be out to long. Go by the place at night before signing anything, because some people version of quit was not the same as mine. College quit is not yelling when your drunk, but I had people talking outside our door and honking to get people to come out. It doesn't matter how quit it is during the day if you can't sleep at night. Make sure it is what you need and can afford, their is nothing worse then going into debt for an apt. At least if its a house you might be able to sell it to cover the debt later, and apt is not your so make sure it is within your budget. (And make sure you have accounted for food, gas, utilities, and the bill you already have.) If its somewhere that snows you might want a carport or garage, when your freezing its hard to clean off your car. Everything else is based on what you like and think you need. Just don't forget the essentials. If the shower doesn't have a door you need a curtain before you move in, ex.......

Unfortunately, the only thing you can really do is read reviews of places online and stay away from the ones with a high number of negative comments.  You won't really know how bad a place is or not until you live there.
"It is far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring."
-- Carl Sagan
