hahaha, I do very much enjoy that movie!
BUT, the holiday... well to me it's just another excuse to have some fun with family and friends!
Not too meaningful to me!

I don't know about Pux. Phil, but if a goundhog came out today here, he would have to see his shadow. It's 59F and no clouds. Unreal.

It already seems like early spring in Minnesota.

I don't know if I trust Phil's prediction but it is a fun event. It is warm and sunny here, feels like spring already. I also thought the movie was funny.

Since it's my sister's birthday, I always celebrate it but we've had lots of groundhogs living in the rocks behind us and they rarely come out on the right day  ;D  I don't think they've hibernated this year cause it's been so nice around here.

You have to wonder who started this idiotic idea of the groundhog cliche.  If you are in a state where there is bad weather, its going t happen and vice versa.

Well I live near Punxsutawney and I still don't celebrate. But it doesn't really matter this year because there has hardly been any winter at all.  :P

Around here, we wait for Jimmy the Groundhog's prediction - and this year's was for an early Spring.

After reading some of the comments, I got curious about the origin of Groundhog Day and did a quick search and found the following article:

German tradition holds that if the sun comes out on Candlemas, the precursor to Groundhog Day, the hedgehog (or badger) will see its shadow and six more weeks of winter will follow. When German settlers came to Pennsylvania they continued this tradition, using groundhogs instead of hedgehogs to predict the weather.

The first official Groundhog Day was celebrated on February 2, 1886 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, with a proclamation in The Punxsutawney Spirit by the newspaper's editor, Clymer Freas: "Today is groundhog day and up to the time of going to press the beast has not seen its shadow." The legendary first Groundhog Day trip to Gobbler's *bleep* was made the following year by a group of spirited groundhog hunters who dubbed themselves "The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club." Clymer, a member of the club, used his editorial clout to proclaim that Phil, the Punxsutawney Groundhog, was the one and only official weather prognosticating groundhog.

Phil's fame began to spread and newspapers from around the world began to report his predictions. Growing legions of fans started making the trek to Punxsutawney every February 2, and with the release of the 1993 movie Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray, the crowds began to number in the tens of thousands. Phil's yearly Groundhog Day predictions are actually even entered into the Congressional Record!

There was some Q&A after the article if anyone wants to read more.
