I did find a new drive for the old laptop that went out on Amazon.  It was about $90 and most of reviews said it wasn't too difficult to replace. I was going to go that route until my husband surprised me with a new computer.

I can sure relate. My computer was down for awhile and I had to use my sons. It was no fun at all cause he was on it all the time.

If you dig around on Ebay you can find refurbished laptop hard drives for around $12 with free shipping. Why not get one and fix your old laptop up so you can run Linus on it?

I have 3 computers, 2 laptops and a desktop. I lost the hard drive in my old laptop to a virus, so then I got Linux installed. I make sure I always keep my files baked up, especially my photos, in case it happens again to one of my other computers. (I was told that Linux usually doesn't get viruses, so I don't have to worry about that one. And it is good for doing offers, since you don't need to have an anti-virus program that potentially will keep the offers from crediting).

I know what you mean.  There have been a few times I had to use my sisters or go to the library and it seems to take us out of our comfort zones.  How weird; it's like not wearing your jewelry - all of a sudden you feel naked without it.

My internet was down for about 48 hours and I was beginning to get very irritable.  I went to the library once but didn't feel comfortable logging in to my FusionCash because I didn't want a different IP address to show up.  We can thank the good Lord that my internet is working again so I can complete offers and do my thing on this site.

Life is good!

Have a great day!

I completely know how you feel, my computer just died a few days ago. And I can't afford a new one right now! :BangHead: :BangHead:

GoodBuddy - I might try the eBay route.  I've got a new computer now but it wouldn't hurt to have a backup plus I'd like to learn more about this stuff.  Can't believe how frustrated and helpless computer problems leave me feeling.  Kinda of makes me long for a slide ruler. Course all I could do with a slide ruler would be slap someone.

My favorite one crashed on New Years Day and I'm having to use the older one as a backup.  :crybaby2:  I have a friend that is going to try and get the crashed one back up and going again when he gets back from vacation in a couple of weeks.  I really hope he can because I did the very dumb thing of keeping files of precious photos and irreplaceable things on there that are valuable without a backup and it's very likely all that is gone forever.  I can't wait until he gets back and takes a look at it.
If you get them back, I would suggest that you get a Google account which will allow you to keep 2gb of pictures far more securely than on a personal computer.  I also use Photobucket as a backup.  I've just had too many computers bite the dust to trust them with really important things like pictures  :)   I'm not real fond of the way Google gets into everything or their politics but they do provide a great service for free.

This must be the month for broken computers.  Mine broke also.  Been trying to do this on my phone that is not a smartphone and that was funny.  Secretly using the one at work .

There are not many things as worst as losing your computer or internet connection.

you know all you needed to do is get a program to overwrite your drive with zeros effectively deleting the virus... of course use another computer to make the bootable cd with the tool so that way it doesnt get infected. then repartition, reformat, and reinstall os. it is impossible for a virus to mechanically destroy a hard drive.
