Lemons to lemonade?
« on: December 30, 2011, 05:29:06 pm »
I heard an old saying from Zig Ziglar (the well known motivational speaker) that said, "If life hands you a lemon, make a lemonade".

Then I read another thread on this forum discussion people who got scammed and it made me think. How far is it from a scam, to a blessing in disguise?

A while back I bought a deal to get a turnkey website that was a directory and helped people who needed backlinks for their own websites. Come to find out, I ended up paying $9.95 a month and couldn't do anything but let the traffic come and go with no benefit to me at all. The guy that sold it to me got a fat commission for the hosting and I never heard from him again. So would you say I got scammed?

Well I thought so at first, so I told the hosting company to cancel the account. The next day I got a call from them asking if I knew there were about 1,500 people a DAY that visited the website? They were mostly robots, but it got me to thinking that maybe the search engines would still give that some link juice credit, so I did a search for smart bookmarking and to my surprise my website was listed several times in the first few pages on Yahoo and Bing (that's who the Fusioncash toolbar uses).

To make a long story shorter, the guy from the hosting company offered to give me a free month to see if I could capitalize on that traffic. With nothing to lose but a little time, I put up a Wordpress Blog and tweaked it to work more like a directory website than a blog, so I could list all my programs and websites in one place. This is a long term project, because I have tons of them, but the bottom line is my lemon just might end up being a nice lemonade after all.

Interesting.  I have thought about doing something like that but never knew enough about it to take a chance.  I know most of the things that I have taken a chance on while online has paid off, enough for me to say I made money from it.  I would like to make enough to make a living at it but not sure of how to do something like you did.

If you mean buy a turnkey website, that was easy. I didn't do anything but order the hosting and send them the money. The second website I set up myself wasn't that hard either. The hosting I use has Fantastico, so installing Wordpress is just a few clicks. Adding the plugins and theme is not much harder, then I just added the content which is not much harder than writing a post here.

If it would interest you, I could clone my site to your hosting to give you a head start. Then all the plugins and theme would be installed and all you would need to do is change the links to your own.

The easiest way to build a website today is with Wordpress. If you use the same hosting I do, go into the Cpanel and click on Fantastico. Select Wordpress from the list of software to install and fill out your name, desired password, etc. then click install. It does all the work for you and lets you click a link to login to your new site. Then you can install a theme to get the look you desire and a few plugins to make it work the way you want it to. Finally just start entering posts and pages, set up the menus and you are on your way. A video would be quite long and detailed, but once you have been through it there would be no need for one. If you use my host, I could get with you on Skype and walk you through which plugins to use and how to set up the menus like I have them. I use it more as an information site instead of a blog, so I remove the comment feature. Trust me, it makes my life a lot easier that way.

hm...interesting story...thanks for sharing! Indeed, that quote is a good one, just like about how life is about managing the cards you've been dealt.
