http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nGw_vAnqPI"We're rednecks, rednecks
And we don't know our *bleep* from a hole in the ground
We're rednecks, we're rednecks
And we're keeping the niggers down
Now your northern *bleep*'s a Negro
You see he's got his dignity
Down here we're too ignorant to realize
That the North has set the *bleep* free
Yes he's free to be put in a cage
In Harlem in New York City
And he's free to be put in a cage on the South-Side of Chicago
And the West-Side
And he's free to be put in a cage in Hough in Cleveland
And he's free to be put in a cage in East St. Louis
And he's free to be put in a cage in Fillmore in San Francisco
And he's free to be put in a cage in Roxbury in Boston
They're gatherin' 'em up from miles around
Keepin' the niggers down"
On an aside, I know there's people in my family that are racist, and not only to blacks. It makes me flinch when they make comments, now that I'm old enough to know that they aren't just jokes in poor taste. Kinda want to rage, but words are words and family is family.
One person acts stupid and a whole town is castigated and shunned in the eyes of some of my family. Towns branded where everyone is a *bleep* or trash or a drug addict. Or if someone takes a job from them.
I... really don't know. A lot of them talk about worthless niggers and they're the ones that work in St. Louis and work for and with black people. My sister-in-law once said she didn't know why black people moved down here, rather than staying away, in the other cities, when they "know" they aren't wanted down here and it'd just be easier and nicer not to be here.
A lot of them will talk about how the biggest racists are black people to white people. I think trying to justify themselves, maybe they know what they're saying isn't right? But I have my doubts there.
I think the most recent was a stupid Facebook post, saying "If you voted for Obama to prove you aren't racist, vote against him now to prove you aren't stupid".
Rage.
I remember seeing a post about Ken - apparently they'd had some contest to find a "real life version". The winner happened to be black and I made the mistake of reading some of the comments on the Yahoo article. Talk about losing faith in humanity. Let's just say I had to go look at lots of pictures of kittens and weep.
I hope for the future, but find it's often hard being in the present.
