Holiday shopping-GC versus presents?

Since I have several nieces and nephews and a few very picky family members I give either cash or gift certificates. For most of my friends I usually make or buy actual presents.

I prefer to buy presents, they are more personable,however, some people are impossible to buy for. I have elderly parents who are always delighted with a gift card.

I usually go with whatever people want.  This year, my youngest brothers want gift cards since they're currently in a "I want to buy things myself stage".  As I live 500+ miles away, that's fine with me; it means shipping will be a little easier.  :p

For everyone else, I'm buying presents though.

Lately I have found it is easier and more practical to get everyone a small gift and the rest of their gift is cash.

I have 2 nieces in college so cash is always just what they need

It depends on the person, but I don't mind receiving gift cards myself. They're just like regular gifts only better, because you get a chance to get exactly what you want. I'm all for them.
