Barking Dog
« on: December 01, 2011, 02:49:51 pm »
My Little puppy has started barking at every little noise lately. Plus those he is familar with, like the next door neighbor, whom he never barked at before. Any ideas on how to teach your dog not to bark at every little noise.

Suggestions sure would be helpfull.

It is absolutely correctable just I suppose varying methods.  In addition to the information indicated by noirlupe you can also find additional info from "the dog whisperer", Cesar Milan.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I will check each one out. So far my rattling coins in a can seem to be working pretty good, but I am always looking for other ideas to post on my puppy tail blog. Thanks and wishing you all a good Christmas

I know walks are important with a dog, and this is not just for exercise.  The walks, when done properly (i.e. you in front and control) establishes the leadership and trust with the dog and can correct/prevent many other problems.  Of course walking a dog, while being a simple thing when in the now, isn't as simple as just walking with the dog and there is a proper way to do such from the moment you grab the leash till you take it off after the walk.

For some dogs a noise re-direction works well. We had one dog who, in spite of getting lots of attention and exercise, still would reactive bark to any little noise outside the house. We got one of those sonic bark-activated correction devices, that lets out a sound when he would bark. It was pretty too, it just looked like a little birdhouse. It did a good job for him. These don't work on all dogs, but it's worth looking into.

Take your dog for a walk everyday. Get him used to the neighborhood and familiarize him with the surroundings so they don't seem suspect to him. Also, let him meet and greet your neighbors and other pets in the area.  The walks will wear him out, and it will put his mind at ease as far as barking at everything goes. You just got to let him socialize with the things that bother him, or he will never stop.

I had one once that I put a collar on that made a high piched sound every time he barked,  after a week I wanted to throw the dog out

Try using a dog whistle. That might shut him up.

My dog never bark unless you ask her for.  Really don't know why.  She only bark at people of things that she don't like.  But barely at all heard her barking.  Really don't know why.

We put a shock collar on our barking dog, she still barks, but not nearly as much as before the collar... you can find them online.
