I guess Im just old fashion
« on: November 28, 2011, 01:21:36 pm »
Why is that the children of the nineties seem mostly disrespectful and have a lack of goals and morals. I for one blame the parents...to a certain extent. My growing up consisted of strict rules and discipline but it seems like the parents now-a-day are afraid of their own children. I look at the adults now and talk to them and they would not have dared do some of the things that kids now have no hesitation about doing or saying. What is the world coming to? I say get the switches out and save our children's lives because if we don't life will do much worse. -spare the rod, spoil the child-

Well I am going to be old fashion right with you.  I can't tell you how many times I see little kids hitting their parents or grandparents
when they don't get their way.  While in the grocery store I have seen 4 year olds spit or swear at their parents.  One day an elderly woman(about 80)
was behind me in line at the store and her grandson smacked her in the face when he was told he couldn't have the candy he was
grabbing off the shelf.  It broke my heart to see that. She quietly said to me, " you know, my kids would have never done that to me".  I just wanted to hug her as she was the sweetest little lady. I keep telling my daughter that when she has kids, "they better behave at Grandma's!"

Too many parents are afraid to discipline their children or they don't care.

I guess I am old fashioned too concerning alot of children acting so rude.  I agree with spanking a child, (not beating them), but letting them know they are loved, but you just don't want them to act that way.

I think it is more children of the 2000s than of the 90s. I am a 90's kid and you better believe I was disciplined and now know how good it was for me. But like you said, it definitely all comes down to the parenting and the culture they raise the kids in. I see kids doing and saying things now that blow my mind. It really scares me to think what the world will be like when I someday have children of my own.

I also believe in proper discipline I am a crisis center child care provider that works with children that are neglected and abused and there's a difference between beating and discipling...I was born in the 80s and my generation was not like the generation of kids now....it scares me to see the changes as each year goes by and how different things are becoming....I guess id be old fashioned too!! I was brought up in a strict rule bound home where I knew who was boss!!

The problem is that parents don't have any training to be parents.  The best they can do is to try to do better than their parents did.  It's a 'sink or swim' job that is often a thankless job.

It's typical for someone to say they want to do something different than their parents did thinking that they won't make the same mistakes.  If I have parents who were physically abusive I might be opposed to physical discipline.

Parents are people who have sex without considering the end result.  They might not be mentally, emotionally or financially equipped to be parents so they often 'get in over their heads'.

It's important for one or both parents to be in a position of authority in the family or children can be confused or frustrated where boundries are concerned.

I believe in teaching children and providing a stable and secure home environment so they can focus and succeed and eventually become functional parents as well.
Have a great day!

While I agree that many kids are out of control, everyone acts like this never happened 20 or 40 years ago, give me a break, it just wasnt all over tv or in your face everyday. It really depends on the family, growing up I remember being very disrespectful to my parents (not proud of it) and would show off to my friends, but now that I have 2 kids I dont let that happen for a second cause I know what it can be like 5 or 10 years from now

Many times, it's the parents fault. they have no time to see where they are with who and what they are doing. they learn many bad stuff from the internet and other kids in school.

I agree parents need to be more involved in their kids lives, both parents are working these days compared to 30 years ago

I think a lot of it has to do with both parents working, and having less time to actually raise their kids. Plus, the culture nowadays encourages kids' "liberty", but no one realizes that they are just growing up to be spoiled brats and they'll have a very hard time adjusting in the real world. Also, I think parents are afraid to spank or otherwise discipline their kids, for fear of being accused of child abuse. But the real child abuse is letting them grow up to be spoiled brats.

The problem with generalized statements such as this is they are always based off experience with relatively few members of the group being commented about as a whole. A lot of people in the 70's used drugs so it would be easy to say people that grew up in the 70's are typically druggies but I have meet far more people that made it through the 70's completely drug free.

You can find me hanging out on Google :)

I am a child of the 80s.  I love my parents.  I am a military brat, so I believe in corporal punishment, since that is what I grew up with.  I have had multiple people criticize my discipline style and tell me that my kids are just babies and that they don't deserve to be spanked for kicking another child.  I WILL NOT have a bully in my house, but I will have kids that listen and understand what is right.  I get so upset when people tell me not to spank or that my child doesn't even deserve timeout for a certain offense.  especially when I see how their children are.
