What do you think about Black Friday shopping hours?
« on: November 15, 2011, 03:04:56 am »
Many of the stores are now trying to open on Thanksgiving Day. In Massachusetts stores can't open a holiday but many of them are trying to open early in the morning on Friday. Many employees and other states are up set because they can't spend the holiday with their family. I totally agree with them.

I know the stores are trying to make money but are we that short on time that we need an extra 12 hours for holiday shopping? :peace:

In Michigan they can open early and walmart and some of the other stores her are starting by 10pm on Thanksgiving day and add new offers every couple of hours.  I am not a big black friday shopper, but if they can offer that price on black friday why is everything so high the rest of the time.

i think it is a little ridiculous that the stores want to start sales Thanksgiving. all the stores should close so that the people can spend time with their families. Luckily i have been finding great deals online and have been finding gifts for my kids for free or really cheap. i really didn't see much that i wanted in the black friday ads anyways. people tend to get crazy during these sales and its not worth people losing their lives for a deal.

I think it is ridiculous that employees always have to cut their family time for this event, I'd hope they are getting paid more but who knows. It really is crazy how stores are trying to "get a jumpstart" when in reality it probably doesn't really matter anyway. Do people REALLY need that gaming system or TV for $x amount? They could very well find it after christmas for almost the same "special pricing"

Yeah, I'm thinking about the employees too. I remember when I used to work retail. Some stores were great; others not so great. They couldn't legally force anyone to work a holiday or weekend, but people who had family obligations were often let go for petty issues.

I do all of my shopping online so it doesn't effect me, but I worry about people who want to spend time with their families but feel forced to work for fear of losing their jobs.

I agree, I was working for Macy's as a part-timer for a while and just heard that they are opening all their stores at midnight, everybody that works has to go at 11:30 the employees are so mad.

My daughter works for an small store at the mall and is going to work at 4:30 am, she likes going shopping and cut of her time, she was kind of disappointed.

I think that anything before 5 am is crazy, but unfortunately there will be the crazy people going at those crazy hours tos get the best deals.

Many stores are hurting right now because of the economy. They want your business. That is fine with me if they want to give us an extra 12 hours of shopping. It really depends on what the employee wants to do with his or her holiday. If they need the money then let them work.

I work at Walmart and I have to work till 12:30 pm Thanksgiving day and then I have to be at work black friday at 2 am.  This is not going to leave me much time with my family on Thanksgiving day.  I don't see how I am going to make it with my family this year.  I also have to work Sat and Sun after Thanksgiving.  We are closed on Christmas day but that could change too.

I don't like black Friday. I don't even want to drive by a store on that day. What happened to the 4 day weekend at thanksgiving?

I tried it one time and never again. Back then it was at 4:00am, people were acting crazy. I found that you can get some good deals online instead of fighting the crowd.

I think changing them was a little extreme, when they were at 4 in the morning it was for the dedicated shoppers- also, placing it at mdnight had people standing in line as early as 630 which means they missed a lot of thanksgiving

There is 1 particular retailer chain in Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, Indianna and Ohio that's 24/7 364 days a year with early Black Friday hours. Now that's crazy.
