i think as long as it doesn't effect their school work poorly then yes i would encourage them to work part time.

I don't see anything wrong with high school & college kids working. They don't have to work 40 hrs a week, but 10-15 hours a week won't hurt them and they learn some responsibility.

I worked all thorough all high school and college. My grades suffered through for it. However, I had to do what I had to do.
I was lying in bed the other night, looking up at the stars, and thinking, "Where in the heck is my roof?"

I think that it is better to have children concentrate on grades and sports during high school and college.  I worked a minimum of three jobs (roughly fifty hours per week) during High School and college and had above average grades as a result. Had I not been working I would, most likely, have had straight A's.  My kids are not working (one is a Freshman in High School) and are getting A's in every class that they are taking as well as maintaining a heavy sports schedule.

I think having a part time job is good for highschool aged kids. It keeps them busy and out of trouble, plus they make their own money to spend on what they want to do. Work teaches the value of a dollar, respect, honestly, etc etc.
College kids on the other hand are adults, so if they can get a job, they should so that they have some money to buy food other than ramen. ;)

I think right now it's a good idea for kids to work. The economy is still very bad and if there is a job for those kids to have then they should take it. They don't have to work so much they can't sleep or get school work done but part time would be good. It does teach responsibility with time and money and manners. I work in retail and it's sad to see some kids come in and have no manners because the money and everything else is just handed to them and the parents don't care. Then there are the kids that come in and are surprisingly nice and well mannered and its refreshing to see and it's their families and work that teach them that.

I agree with gaylasue 100% kids have the rest of their lives to work let them enjoy there high school years and they can learn responsibilty with clubs or sports. If you have the means in college to dont work seriously most people from when they first get a job do not stop for decades why not take advatange you are a kid!!! And for those who say a high schooler is not a kid I dont believe that you are a KID!!!! and that does not last long !!!!!

I don't think you should make them work, but I think they should be given the opportunity to work, they do need encouraged, not discouraged. If theya re encouraged to work with something to look forward to then they will be better suited to get out there in a working environment.

Yes, full time, part time, either or.
It helps with management skills: monetary and chronological.
The thing that needs work is the tuition.
Right now it is impossible to work and pay for school/books unless you are going back for your second degree.
And tuition is the only thing that hasn't dropped in price in the last 4 years with this whole economic crisis.
And the government (federal and state) has basically given the universities the go ahead to keep raising rates.
At least here in Arizona
