Why Do Some People Get Tattoos?

 Some people get tattoos because it is a way for them to express to others how they feel about themselves. Because some people have a very difficult time trying to express the way they feel with words.

I asked a friend once who is just about covered with tattoos and he said it is the one way of expressing yourself and who you are that noone else can control or dictate or take from you. Myself i have none but my youngest daughter does as wel as most of my friends.I think some are nice looking but i`m A whimp you are not sticking me!

If you've seen the tattoo shows such as Miami Ink or LA Ink, their customers tell why they're getting tattoos. Some do it to remember someone who passed on, or something that happened to them or their child(ren). Some get tattoos just because they like them.

I think most people do it as an expression, but the thing is depending on who you are and what you do, it's like you are expected to have tattoos or not. I personally like tattoos, but I don't think I'll be ever getting any.

I have quite a few tattoos and all of the ones I have mean something to me or represent my feelings or thoughts. Many people get tattoos to express themselves and to be walking art. Unfortunately some people get them for dumb reasons and regret them later. You have to remember that they will be there forever and that they should mean to you today what they will in years to come

I think it is great to get a tatoo if you have a real meaning behind what you are getting. When people get them just to have one, that I think is not smart.

My sister's new boyfriend mostly gets his because he's an alcoholic and a moron
They've only known each other a couple months, and he's already gotten her name tattooed in huge letters across the front of his throat (even though everyone, her and the tattooist included, told him he was stupid to do it).
He also has tears on his face and a lot of prison tattoos all over his arms, back, and shoulders - and I mean "prison" as in quality and place gotten, not like gang or anything.
Worst is this huge list of random names and nicknames on his thigh - the story apparently is that he was drunk and wanted a tattoo, but no one had any ideas for good ones, so they just tattooed everyone's name/nicknames. 

I don't mind tattoos though. Don't have any myself, but know (saner) people and family who do (or who want to get some).
Honestly, unless it's really cool or excessively big, I hardly notice tattoos (sorta like piercings).

I think tattoos look good on people when they are YOUNG, but when you're old, and you can't tell what it was supposed to be, you might regret it.... try the rub on ones- you can wash them off! lol

Boy, that's an interesting topic.  When I was in college I took a course called the socio economic aspect of clothing and adornment.  There I learned it was a) social strata in the culture such as wealth or class or availablity for mating, b) personal expression c) debasement of the body.  Personally, I can't wait to see all these folks at 70 whent he tats are smeared, wrinkled and totally unidentifiable. Course, that was what my dad thought about pierced ears too.  And, well, yeah, my ears do hang low now.
