side effects from sleeping pills

so i have been a trouble sleeper for my whole life, so i have taken sleeping pills every now and then i took one about a week ago it had been at least 6 months since i have taken one i did not find any sleeping pills so i took benadryl whihc i have taken maybe 6 times in the last 2 years and i took it and i was likea  zombie for 3 days literally not able to stay awake and could not keep my eyes open i finally am recovered and was wondering has this ever happened to you ?

I am a severe chronic insomniac.  I have taken both sleeping pills as well as over the counter meds.  In most situations, there are side effects.  I choose to try to manage without any medications if at all possible.  But I also have had to limit my activities and lead a very simple life.

I have been in a zombie like state for days at end due to a combination of no sleeping coupled with extreme deep sleep due to exhaustion or medication. 

How I have best managed my insomnia is to limit my life.  I work only p.t. and have to limit relationships because I find them so stressful.  My whole life revolves around my insomnia.  I developed insomnia in 1975 and have not had one normal sleep since. 

Benadryl is very powerful.  I have had specialists in sleep disorders recommend Benadryl as a sleep aid.  I have tried it and sometimes it works but other times it does not help.  It drugs me but not for days.

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO TO SLEEP WITHOUT TAKING THEM, AND THEN YOU WILL NOT EVEN BE SLEEPY BUT YOU WILL BE WANT TO TAKE THEM... DONT DO IT!!!!

i try to stay away from the sleeping pills, each time i take them i tend to get addicted and wont be able to sleep withou them. I'll take it prscribed by a doctor, ike a pain reliever or so, n that's about it.
