Weird cat behavior
« on: September 09, 2011, 01:37:05 pm »
Anyone familiar with this- my cat likes to chew on, and eat plastic (bags) and anything bungee (bra straps).
Then of course, he throws it up!

Yes, I had a cat that chewed electric wires, so I bundled and hid them out of his reach.  Then in his last couple years he took to plastic bags.  I just made sure he didn't get to any.  My thinking is that he was trying to cope with the infirmities of aging.

It could be a dietary deficiency.  He might be doing it so he can vomit when he has a hair ball or other tummy discomfort.  Have you tried giving him some cat grass?  That's what nature provides as a vomit catalyst.  You might also put a little cod liver oil or olive oil in his food to help things pass.  It's good for his coat too.  A pinch of ginger in his food would help settle his tummy.  Does he eat kibble or just soft food?  If he eats only soft food giving him some crunchy kibble might help.  Give each of these things a good try, one at a time, and keep an eye out for other symptoms.  If nothing works have him checked out, maybe tested for a deficiency.  Good luck.

I had a cat who loved to chew on plastic bags too.  Never figured out why.  Luckily she never got sick from doing that.

Years ago, my neighbor had a cat who liked to eat the yarn ball it played with. The cat died :( They got another cat who died of the same thing. They'd put their yarn *bleep* into hiding, but the 2nd cat still got them.

When I was a kid, the family cat always found a way into my sweater drawer and would sleep there. It was cute, but it was a white peranese with long fur. My sweaters would be covered!

You can find me on Youtube!

I have one cat that does this. The vet thinks she might have a dietary diffecnecy. She also was throwing up at least once a day. I tried all the different foods, vitamins and hairball treatments the vet recommended. I finally found relief for my littl girl with all natural food!. It seems she had a food allergy to either the dyes or preservatives. She stopped eating plastic pastic bags - although she still likes to play wth them for the noise!

This is funny. My cat loves feet. He can hate a person but loves to rub on their feet anyway.

I also try to hide everything, but am not always successful. He seems to have a radar for these items!

He is on a prescription diet for bladder issues, but has had the bungie/plastic eating habit since he was little. The food is crunchy. He has just always had this behavior. Bizzarre.
