Why Do People Forget To Clean Their Tongue?
« on: September 03, 2011, 01:03:06 pm »
???Why do people forget to clean their tongue after they brush their teeth? I guess they don't know how important it is to clean their tongue. The tongue is one of the reasons why people have bad breath. Because germs and plaque bacteria forms on top of the top and if it is not remove it can  cause bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. I have noticed that most of the dentists or hygienists on televison advertisements for toothpaste or toothbrushes are always saying  brush and floss your teeth to prevent tooth decay and gum disease but they never say and clean your tongue.

Where are you getting this assumption from?  I clean my tongue.  Probably not when I was little though, and that's probably one reason why children get so many cavities.  I think you're right that there needs to be more education and "common knowledge" established about cleaning one's tongue, because it's not something I knew about until I was older.  :P

I always clean my tongue too. I don't feel like my mouth is clean until I do. I actually have a tongue cleaner. I think a lot of people actually do this. It's just not something that is talked about a lot. You are right though. It really should be promoted more with brushing and flossing, and kids should be taught to do it. My mom always taught me to and got me a tongue cleaner and I think that's why I do it now, but I know most parents don't. It's not because they aren't good parents, just not something you really think of. Just because it isn't your teeth that people can see and can rot out, doesn't mean that it shouldn't be cleaned too. It's definitely something that helps bad breath and gets germs out of your mouth (actually one of the most common places for them)

If you don't have one of those tongue cleaners a spoon works well. I keep a couple of "Wendy's" plastic spoons in my overnight bag. They are good strong plastic spoons and I can just toss it in the waste basket. :)

Purely as speculation, some people might find putting their tongues into a forge to clean them to be a painful experience.
One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

You are absolutely right.   Tongue cleaning is never mentioned!

I always clean my tongue so I guess I kind of assume that everyone knows to clean their tongue. I can't stand having gunk or whatever it is on my tongue. Drives me nuts.

hahah I always thought I was the only one who brushed their tongue, my mom always made me do it when I was young, but I agree that it is important to brush your tongue.  Brushing your teeth also makes your breath smell fresh.

My tooth brush has a tongue cleaner on the end and I use it. Always remember to clean that part of the brush too. I spray hydrogen peroxide on my brush before and after each use.

Do you personally know that people don't clean their tongue after brushing?  I do and always have because that's where the germs are, but you are making an assumption that others do not.

I'd take it you were referring to those who are unaware of the importance of brushing their tongue.
But in all truth I agree with your point that there needs to be more emphasis or awareness on the subject.

I use a toothbrush and on certain circumstances a dedicated scraper for tending to my tongue. I may on occasion talk about brushing teeth, but I never talk to people about brushing the tongue with exception of immediate family members.
