Living Rural
« on: August 31, 2011, 03:07:44 pm »
How many of you have gone or will go to your county fair this year? Did any of you enter anything in the fair?  I did for the first time in many many years (since I was a kid).  My husband decided to enter some chainsaw carvings and I am entering quilts and photos.  I think it is kind of a kick.

Favorite event is the harness racing with para mutual betting.  Anyone else have a favorite event?

I'm a little more county than I used to be.

Oh I used to just love that.  Sadly I don't live anywhere near a fair now.  Not really something they do around here, but it sure was fun.

Ours is next week and I may/may not go. I'm not much into prize livestock or anything, but love the exhibits of crafts, especially the sewing ones. I like to go and eat junk like funnel cakes, etc. I don't ride the rides much anymore unless one of the grandkids beg me, so that part of the attraction doesn't appeal. I get more excited at a good Farmer's Market once a week at our local fairgrounds. I live in a very rural County and love the laid back lifestyle. I don't think I could ever go back and live in San Francisco again like I did for many years.

I do enjoy seeing all the baked goods and who wins Grand Champion in the baking division. Sometimes you can pick up the prize recipe if the person is willing to share it. When they started ruling that the recipe had to be made public to enter, then a lot of women did not enter. I have a couple recipes that i won't divulge to anyone except pass them down to family like they were passed down to me.

I like taking the little kids down the mid way letting them play a few games and a few rides.  I like going through the arts and crafts.  If they have a little petting zoo for the kids we will make it there also.  But,  Usually it's the life bands and the beer garden for me.  I haven't been to the fair in along time.

County fairs are so much fun.  I remember growing up as a child and going to the fairs.  Too bad I don't live near a rural area where I can attend a fair.

I have no interest in fairs. I can look at farm animals anytime for free and I'm too old for the carnival. I want to eat food, not look at it.

Just thought I would let you all know.  FOr the 8 items we entered in the county fair, We got 4 blue ribbons(firsts), 2 reds (seconds) and two third places.  What a trip!  I was really surprised cause there was a lot of nice stuff there.  I'll have to ask a friend and see if they can help me figure out why my stuff won and others didn't. Maybe just because it was different.  ANyway, it was fun.

We go to the fair every year just to see the exhibits.  Its amazing how so many people in this world are so talented. I, myself, have not entered anything.

I haven't been to one since I moved to the city. I do however still have friends that enter lol !
