Bed Sharing - For or Against?
« on: August 03, 2011, 07:29:21 pm »
I get a mommy news letter every week and the below was a quote overheard in the community

"All this anti-bed-sharing nonsense is pure propaganda. it's been a couple years since I've studied up on it, but I remember that bed-sharing is only abnormal in a few cultures, ours being one, and that SIDS rates are not higher in countries where bed-sharing is the norm (might even be lower). So, those in the U.S. who don't sleep with their babies are actually the anomaly."

What is your opinion on bed sharing?

In our case my sons room is attached to ours no door between them, if he cries all night we're awake all night so sometimes it is easier for him just to lay in bed with us cause he'll go right to sleep. It's not every night by any means so we shouldn't have issues with kicking him out when he gets older but besides the less space to sleep we don't mind it. When he started to roll over I was more afraid of him dying b/c they say not to let them sleep on their stomachs so by having him in our bed I knew he was ok and with all the crib deaths I can't blame parents who would rather bed share.

Unless you are dirt poor and can't afford beds everyone should have their own beds.

Bed sharing doesn't mean you can't afford beds, it means they have theirs but sleep in yours as well.

Would you say cultural as in ie. Caucasians versus Hispanics or more like United States versus the other 6 Continents?

I know this.  I was saying the only reason I think you should share beds with your kids is if you can't afford beds.  That's more understandable.  I don't have a problem if it's every now and then or the child is sick or scared and they get in your bed once in a while but I don't think they should stay in the same bed for years unless you are dirt poor and can't afford beds.

If you are talking about a very small baby no I would not want to fall asleep with the baby in the bed. I would fear that I or my husband would roll over on them or that the baby would fall off the bed. I always had my babies in their own bed next to mine though and used a baby wedge hee hee hee !

When I had my son he had his own bed but somtimes I would wake up and let him sleep with me.  I had one of those day beds and one morning I put him in bed with me and he slipped through the bars and landed on the floor. Well I heard him crying and I couldn't find him I looked for him in my bed looked in his craddle and finallly found him under my bed it scared me.  I am not for or against sharing my bed. I will say this it took me along time to get my son to sleep in his own bed, I got married and just before that he started sleeping in his own bed and bedroom.

When I had my son there was the one time he was crying and I went and got him out of his craddle and put him in bed with me.  We both went back to sleep and some time later he rolled off in between the bars of my day bed and I heard him crying I looked in the bed for him looked in his craddle could not find him I started to panic and than I found him under my bed and I went and got him I was so scared.  I also let him sleep with me through the years because we where staying in a camper and that was the only place for him so when I finally got my own place I had a rough time getting him to sleep in his own bedroom and bed it wasn't until I got married that he stop sleeping with me.

Honestly I'm against it. It also depends on age and childs weight.

i have had a friend who has baby that died from SIDS while he was sleeping in there bed.  would say keep a blanket or sheet or something with your sent on it and dont wash it much in the cribs with the child which gives them confort! they also have monitors out now for keeping track of the baby's reathing while sleeping and will sound if it stops for just a few sec. Also a basanette would be  great to have beside your bed.
