That verse reads in the King James as "being rooted" NOT rotted... :o

"For whatever was written in the past, was given to us for our learning, so that through patience and comfort of the Scriptures, we would have hope."

People don't believe in god(s) for rational reasons.. They believe because their parents convinced them, or because it's socially expected, and because such beliefs give them "comfort".
They need to believe and be reassured that they have someone watching over them, that their friends and loved ones will be waiting for them when they die, that their lives have some sort of "purpose", and so on.
Many people find the things discovered about the universe frightening, and the prospect of mortality horrifies them, and they use their religious "faith" or beliefs to hide behind, and to seek "psychological comfort".

“It is, I think, an error to believe that there is any need of religion to make life seem worth living.”
-- Sinclair Lewis

"Being rotted" was more contextually apropos ... and funnier.

One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

Well-said.  It may very well be that the religious admonishment to "fear g-d" is an acknowledgement that the real basis of "faith" is fear/abject terror.

"Fear paints pictures of ghosts and hangs them in the gallery of ignorance."
-- Robert Green Ingersoll

I can't grasp the concept of worshiping or loving god but also then fearing god; (that is to say IF I could grasp the god concept at ALL)

HOW do you (not @ you "falcon9-you" ;) ) say -"god is to be feared", and then also say "You must put your faith in god, you must trust in god"??

Dumbing the whole thing way down -
That's like me telling someone who is deathly afraid of my snarling, growling rottweiler (I don't have one) something like this:
"Yeah, he is pretty scary. And a great watchdog, I don't worry about anyone getting in the house at night, that's for sure.
Wow-it's really dark out, it's getting pretty late.  Would you mind going outside to look for him?
Nah, you don't need to worry about him - Yeah, I'm sure.
I think he knows you well enough that he won't go after you - you can trust him"

How do you love and worship and praise, that which you fear as you say must??
It DOESN'T make ANY sense!!

"Assure a man that he has a soul and then frighten him with old wives' tales as to what is to become of him afterward, and you have hooked a fish, a mental slave."
-- Theodore Dreiser

Romans 5:6-8

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
