Yes, it is based on the number of posts you have.

  Thanks for asking this question...I too was wondering what the Gold Stars were for and what the various ratings are next to profiles on the forum. Still learning the ins and outs here at FC and am always interested in reading the topics that seem to fit my questions, I just don't always respond. Will keep visiting the forums for info. Awesome job all the members are doing to help those of us new to FC to learn the ropes! Ty again for helping out!

That'd be the way to go, since Falconeer has more stars.  Seriously though, someone should mention that the stars are just indications of how much one has posted.  For instance, "silver" means over 1000 posts and "gold" means over 2000 posts made.
