How do you even change your own oil? seems like it'd be easy but I know nothing about cars other than how to drive them. and how do you dispose of the oil?

I try to have it changed every 5,000 miles but often times I forget and I exceed the date.  I think it is how you drive your car that is the true factor in when you should change the oil.

I bought my Honda Fit from a dealership that has something called Priorities for Life.  This means free oil changes every 3,000 miles and other free diagnostic checkups.  Pretty good deal.

I don't even think about changing until it hits 7,000 and never had a problem, I think changing at 3,000 is nothing but a conspiracy to pick our pockets.

i'm usually on a 5000-7000 mile stage
changing oil yourself can be easy or can be hard depending on the type/make/model of your car -- some cars are not as easy to get access to the filter etc.

Yep, every 5,000 miles like clockwork.  The better you maintain your car, the longer it'll last.

I don't drive that much so even though you are supposed to get them done every 3 months, I usually stretch mine to 6 or so.

We change our oil and go in for scheduled maintenance every 7500 miles or six months, whichever comes first.  We use a synthetic blend and have never had a problem.  Most people have their oil changed way too frequently.  Dealerships and quick lube places have them believing they still need to change it every 3000-5000 miles, or every three months, like it was recommended years ago.  I think a lot of people just don't take the time to read over their car's manual and maintenance guide, and rely rather on what the mechanic tells them for regular maintenance, which of course if they had their way would have you coming in every 1,000 miles.

Its easy to do the oil change yourself if you don't have any trust in your local mechanic shops. You can drive your vehicle up on ramps or park it over a pit in the ground that you can crawl into. Then, you just get underneath the front end of your vehicle. Locate where your oil pan is at and remove the oil pan cap. Your oil should start draining by now and make sure to place a bucket or something to catch all the oil. Now, you can remove the oil filter while you're waiting for the old oil to drain. Sometimes, the oil filter can be found on top in a corner like my 1991 GMC Sonoma truck. The oil filter could also be found nearby the oil pan. You will need a special tool that is designed to remove the oil filter. Now, you can put the oil pan cap back on. Make sure to install the new oil filter as well. Then, you just fill your vehicle up with the recommended amount of oil for your vehicle. Anyways, I have enough knowledge to do my own oil change :)
