Be honest and give them and yourself closer. It's the only way to move on. I divorced my Ex over 2 yrs. ago and he still doesn't get it. I've been honest with him but he's in denial...STILL!

I would say honesty and, depending on the situation (assuming no abuse or anything like that), doing it in person, rather than through text or phone message.

do it in person and be honest with them. Don't give them some excuse that you and them know is a lie, being honest might at least salvage some kinda friendship because you never know what they are thinking or feeling.

I agree, but I also think telling them in public ( like a restaurant) is a good idea. They are less likely to freak out and make a scene.

Be honest with them, why are you breaking up with them.  Was it because someone else is showing more interest in you, or have they changed.  just try to be honest.

Yes, be honest with them because that is the most important thing. And also doing it face to face somewhere where it is just the two of you so it won't be any distractions.
