Do you think our Nuclear Power Plants are Safe?

In light of the recent natural disastors and contributions made by the Japanese themselves.  Do you think our Nuclear Power Plants are safe?

Are plants that are built close to the sea (San Onofre, for example) safe enough to withstand a 9.0 earthquake AND a tsunami??? I have my doubts.

I think our nuclear plants have been built to the best safety factors. I hope the situation in Japan does craet fear so strong that we will not explore building new nuclear plants for energy.

No, they are not safe anywhere. It's cheap energy but even without natural disasters there's  also the issue of the nuclear after waste. In the 1990's I read that they bury the nuclear waste. It would take about 100yrs to decompose to be safe. I don't know what they do now with the waste today, but I don't think that there is enough room on earth to bury nuclear waste every year.

No, Nuclear power is a very slippery slope. It is unstable and has proven throughout history that it will not wear a leash, it will not go for a walk, sit and stay, or roll over!!!!!

No. Even if there isn't a disaster, these plants produce nuclear waste and I doubt it's disposed of properly.

I never did like the idea of using nuclear power plants for anything.
There are plenty of other options for energy.....same thing with oil. We don't need to use oil.
I think, in view of this disaster, we will see the end of nuclear plants.
It's a shame that people don't understand the dangers of certain things until disaster strikes.
Human beings are smarter than that......

I think that, if they are built in a safe spot, nuclear power plants are safe.  I am not so sure that there are any safe spots left and that alternative energy sources need to be explored.  Building within five miles of an ocean doesn't make sense to me but I am not an expert on Nuclear power.  Given extreme weather conditions that occur near the ocean and tectonic plates a view of the ocean wouldn't be my first consideration when building a plant.
