My Grandma Ownes the Collection Company

So my fiance owes a collection company like a thousand dollars for going to jail a super long time ago - and it's getting in the way of us buying a house.  I'll leave out other details, but the collection company he owes money to - my grandma is the owner.  Her and I don't talk but we are on good terms, it's not like we hate each other.  Every blue moon when we see each other in public we chit chat and catch up.  I asked her basically if she could cut us a break in any way and am hoping she can - what do you think?  Rude?  Think she will?

I think you grandma should cut you a break, because your are family.   Just this once she should cut you a little break.   Some family might not go out of the way for family.  I wish you good luck.

If there's a way she can, she probably will the way you describe your relationship. But, even though she's the owner, there just might not be a way, or might be seen as nepotism. I guess you will just have to wait and see. Maybe make plans to see her and talk to her more about it and find out.

For me, what differrence does it make who owns the company.  If your fiance owes them money, then he needs to pay it up.  I wonder how many other people/businesses he owes money to???

lol he doesn't owe anyone else money.  But he mentioned going there tomorrow to pay, which shocked me - I thought for sure he would want to wait and see what my Grandma had to say.

My guess is it might depend on the size of the company.  If it's very small, and she was willing - she may be able to arrange a payment plan to show you are not in default of what's owed which should get you past that.  If it's a large company, then she may be too far removed from the day to day workings, and she could run into legal issues with favoritism of family.

Depending on a family's comfort level, another option would be if she would agree to provide a personal load to cover the debt - then the "official" collection would be satisfied, and you can pay back the money on a personal level.  Like asking money from other family or friends to cover a shortfall, and they trust you enough to pay it back.

Good luck - sounds like things are on their way to being resolved regardless.
