My Computer DIED....had to buy a new one...
« on: February 09, 2011, 06:48:01 pm »
My desktop computer died.....the harddrive burnt out or something like that.

Anyway, today I am the proud owner of a new laptop.

Good, except I lost all my bookmarks, my Roboform, and  cannot get into Skype again.

This might take me awhile to get back online.

Any suggestions from anyone about how to retrieve what was on the old burnt out computer?
Thanks in advance!

Janet

I had a Gateway computer one time that the disk crashed.  They said they could retrieve some info, but didn't guarantee anything, and it would be very expensive.  I pretty much opted to start over.  Sometimes if you have your information backed up, and you get the same operating software, you can pick up from where you left off.

I have a Mac now, and it just seems to keep going and going.  My next purchase is a Mac laptop myself.  I'm sold on Apple products.

It pays to back up occasionally.  Any special recipes I found online gets printed out, just in case my disk crashes again.  it's also a good thing to list all your favorite websites, and have them printed out on hard copy also.  Your personal ID's and PWD's are also a good thing to have stored somewhere else except on your computer.  Anything you think would be hard to replace, should be printed out on hard copy to refer back to.

Thanks Annella....

I plan to go back to the store today to see if the tech there can help me.  This is very frustrating.  I had a LOT of stuff saved in bookmarks/folders.  I now have a backup program --- a little late.  I do have a hardcopy of Roboform.....just not a up to date copy, but it is better than nothing.

Ugh, sorry Janet.

I'm usually really good with backing up, but it seems that every time I've ever had a computer die, it was at a time when I was really busy and kept putting off backing up.

Which reminds me, I really should do it today....

Sorry, I don't know how to retrieve your information from your old computer but congratulations on getting a laptop!  :)

When my old PC stopped working, I just bought a new laptop 5 years ago. I haven’t been able to retrieve anything. So I just start anew with my new laptop–just like moving to a new location and starting a new life again.

Depends on how badly the drive crashed but there are tons of software out there to retrieve your stuff. Usually if it isn't that bad you can use a bootable linux to recover it. You do need to know a little about fixing computers...

And for Skype did you just forget the password?

If you lived close to me I'm sure I can take a look at it to help you out. I've recovered files for my sister's company, which the IT department said they couldn't and would had to send it out, which would have costed the company at least $1000. Sucks I didn't get any commission though :( LOL I think my sister took me out for sushi. Oh well anything is better than nothing.

Dealing with a dead computer sucks.  I hope you had a great backup source.  I use Carbonite.  My computer crashed last year and I had to rebuild my computer.  I thought I lost everything but it was all safe with Carbonite.  The only bad thing was that I lost my purchased iTunes.  (I haven't contacted apple yet about it.)

Thank goodness for techy sons. They have been my saving grace. Between the three of them I don't get ripped off by mechanics telling me I need something that I don't and anytime I have a computer problem that I can't solve they come to the rescue.

I had a HP pc and it died about a year ago.  At the time I didn't have to much money so I got I online and found a really good deal with ShopNBC.   They have a payment plan and it's like HSN and you can find this program on cable TV.
