Are you afraid of the phone?
« on: January 11, 2011, 09:02:41 am »
:-[ I didn't think I was until I decided to go into business for myself that involves making phone calls.  Now I seem to do anything else, first.  Here lately, I don't even answer the phone unless I know who is on the other end.  I think I missed some calls from my son because he changed his number and I didn't find out until later.  I suppose it's time to get to it.  Have a good day.

I too don't like using a phone. I prefer to receive calls rather than make them, and I only answer the phone if I know who is calling.

I dislike talking to people over the phone. Texts are fine and voice calls on the computer are fine as well but something about talking to someone on the phone just feels too 'official' to me :dontknow:

Never been a phone person I hate talking on the phone.  I don't mind if I have to call a business and talk about something but when it's personal relations for some reason I don't like it.  There are some people I don't mind talking to on the phone because I have things to say but if I have to talk to certain relatives that I don't have much to say to it feels like torture.

My brother used to put his daughter on the phone when she was younger to talk to me and I hated it because what do you have to say to a quiet 6-10 year old other than talking about how was school or something like that.  She's a teenager now and doing awful in school and stopped playing sports and has her own phone so I don't have those awkward conversations any more.

I try to avoid the phone as well.  I think it's because of the unknown - who's on the other end?  what do they want?  Texting and the internet are also to blame since most people text and write emails before they pick up the phone.

We signed up for our state's no call list several years ago & it's been great.  We no longer get sales calls during dinner - I hated that!  We still get a few sales calls but as soon as I mention the no call list, they hang up  ;D

No, but I do screen my calls.  I don't return calls to anyone I don't know.

it really depends who's on the other end.
i can talk to my best friends for hours at a time, when
i have time to spare. carrying on a conversation usually
comes pretty easy to me...

however, certain relatives (like someone else mentioned)
and especially collectors make it extremely awkward and
annoying. i've been learning to hold my own with the
collectors, though. they thrive on making you feel like
the smaller person - but when you remain calm, explain
that you understand your rights and know exactly what
is going on, THEY surprisingly get a little antsy!  ;D you just
have to use a little psychological tactics and wise up to
their ways.

this has been helping me get over my slight phone fear lately.
[ we all have a place in history. mine is in the clouds. ]

I'm not "afraid" of the phone...I just don't like it when salespeople call and I can't politely get off the phone with them.  They won't take no for an answer, they end up wasting alot of my time and I've thrown the phone (my cell is my main phone) into another room before to let them carry on their conversation with themselves.  I love caller id, love voicemail and have encouraged clients to email me because they get a quicker response that way---and they love that.

Sheryl, if you have caller ID, then wouldn't you know if it's a number you don't recognize?  I won't answer any blocked numbers, 800 numbers, or any strange area code numbers.  However, since your in business and have clients, I can see if maybe you might think it's a client.  Have you seen those phones where you can see someone?  You can get on a National "No Call" list.
