How do learnt people study or classify emotions?
« on: January 01, 2011, 10:27:20 am »
Most learnt people have to be able to touch or see it in order to believe it.  So how do they know emotions?  DO they just an elaborate guess(theory) at the persons facial expressions or tone of voice and conclude that's happiness, sadness etc??!!!

Neat question.

"Emotion is the complex psychophysiological experience of an individual's state of mind as interacting with biochemical (internal) and environmental (external) influences. In humans, emotion fundamentally involves "physiological arousal, expressive behaviors, and conscious experience". Emotion is associated with mood, temperament, personality and disposition, and motivation."

Before I can answer your question, I need the definition of the word (learnt), please.

Learnt is a slang term for educated people.

@Falconer02: So they theorize emotions based on there limited understanding of the brain? I guess it makes sense, 1+1=2  :P

Obviously there are limitations of understanding the brain, but it's conclusive that it has much to do with our interaction with others (from birth) and our biochemical juices flowin'. That's why ethnocentrism exists and it's also why people take anti-depressants and all those other drugs. People can have different emotions for the same things- politics, music, and games for instance. It has much to do with previous interactions with things and how our mind creates the concepts from past examples (due to reactions in the brain). I'm sure this is just the tip of the iceburg of what the researches study though.

If you're looking for an amazingly complex explanation, you're going to have to do the research yourself in order to understand it. I can only go so far and recall what I know. The wiki article is just the basic jyst of the whole idea. Considering her path of study, Jordandog is probably the finest candidate to answer a question like this though. But I dunno where she is!

I'm just playing the skeptic here  :P THE SHOE IS ON THE OTHER FOOT THIS TIME FALCONOR!!!!! Do scientists agree that the e an emotion can mean electronic motion?  Our brain uses electrical currents called synapses right?

What is the point you are trying to make though? I'm kind of lost now.

Something had to power the generator(the brain) to allow for electrical currents to exist(synapses)

Something had to power the generator(the brain) to allow for electrical currents to exist(synapses)

It begins with chemical synapse. It apparently causes the electrical currents to exist. Taken from the wiki article-

The process begins with a wave of electrochemical excitation called an action potential traveling along the membrane of the presynaptic cell, until it reaches the synapse.

The electrical depolarization of the membrane at the synapse causes channels to open that are permeable to calcium ions.

Calcium ions flow through the presynaptic membrane, rapidly increasing the calcium concentration in the interior.

The high calcium concentration activates a set of calcium-sensitive proteins attached to vesicles that contain a neurotransmitter chemical.

These proteins change shape, causing the membranes of some "docked" vesicles to fuse with the membrane of the presynaptic cell, thereby opening the vesicles and dumping their neurotransmitter contents into the synaptic cleft, the narrow space between the membranes of the pre- and post-synaptic cells.

The neurotransmitter diffuses within the cleft. Some of it escapes, but some of it binds to chemical receptor molecules located on the membrane of the postsynaptic cell.

The binding of neurotransmitter causes the receptor molecule to be activated in some way. Several types of activation are possible, as described in more detail below. In any case, this is the key step by which the synaptic process affects the behavior of the postsynaptic cell.

Due to thermal shaking, neurotransmitter molecules eventually break loose from the receptors and drift away.

The neurotransmitter is either reabsorbed by the presynaptic cell, and then repackaged for future release, or else it is broken down metabolically

WOW! It's really that simple!  :o

Electricity is very important to life really, so it would make sense that the brain runs on electrical pulses.  Have you read about abiogenesis?  Some type of "spark" is pretty much required.  The Miller-Urey experiment in particular is rather fascinating, even if they keep vacillating from one side to the other (on whether they agree it's possible or not).

Very well put, Animikokala. Obviously abiogenesis has problems within the models, but it's still fascinating that it actually holds a good theory of connections between how life formed and how we still have those attributes.

Well, I know a person's emotion by their body language, facial expression, tone of their voice etc.

Do you or are you going by feeling? You see according to "learnt" people going by feeling is for ignorant people  :P

My emotions tell me 'educated' sounds like a better word than 'learnt' in today's society.

I don't know educated doesn't sound past tense it sounds present like your still being educated instead of learned the material. Learnt although being slang implies that you learned the material already.  :P
