That sounds like fun!!! You will have to let us know if you find anything of value! I'm in Wisconsin so I can't give you ideas on where to go. Do you have any beaches around you? They say beaches are always good places to find coins and jewellery (sp?).

The beaches are bout 4 hours south, so not convenient for frequent detecting. I wonder if farmers would get mad if you walked through their fields?

In doing some research on this i found that it is against the law (some antiquties law) to take anything from state or federal land. This is not specific to metal detecting. You could be waling along, find an arrowhead in a park, and technically you have broken the law if you disturb or remove it! What a load of sh#@$.

I have a metal detector A Garrett Acer with a sniper head (waterproof) the Best Places I have found are places that people like to go.
Parks I have found alot of coins on in the ball fields in the ground ,espicially around the base of trees. anywhere people hang out even the dirt roads and around mailboxes.
Picnic areas , shore lines of ponds old foundations farm fields. Old parking areas you name it.
Just get permission to go on other peoples land. most people dont care as long as you dont dig big craters .The word to the wise wear gloves when digging I say this because I have incountered many drug needles in my hunting
There are many places where you are from that you might come across artifacts.
If you really get the bug ;D
Check out some of the treasure hunting groups in your area.
They are online and they have meets.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting

As for metal detecting on a farm please do not do this without asking first it real pissy us farm off to come home and see strange people on our land, I have people come from as far away as Texas who come  here every few years and the always ask and show what they get.  The last one who came and did not ask I put a note on his truck tellin him he was stealing and took a picture of he car tag to give the sheirff dept.

What I do Is I Ask if I could search with my metal detector on there land.
I explain a little about it. Ask if they have lost anything that you might look for for them.
Any holes you make make them small and fill in well always respect the Land.
