Now I am not saying this is the case, but it may not be for a credit check. Alot of check cashing places will run your ssn through peeps like telecheck or some other check fraud monitoring company. Not to check your credit but to make sure you don't have a string of bounced checks. Yes you could probably do it with just your checking account number, but what about some one who has only had thier account for one or 2 months?

I did the payday loan thing and ask them when they wanted my ss#. it is to verify that you are who say you are, thats all, they told me they had alot of people giving false info so they didnt have to pay back the money. it only takes a few to ruin things for everyone. watch the intrest on those things, they can get out of hand fast if dont stay on your payments. Learned that  the hard way to!

I DO NOTand WHY anyone would ever take out such a HIGH INTREST loan as one of these PayDay Loans?? If you have not been able to manage your money and got to this point, WHAT makes you think this rediculous loan will help you to manage your money any better??

You have to pay back the money that you already DON'T HAVE, PLUS an awful lot of intrest that you already DON"T HAVE. This is NOT SMART!!

Just like people that *bleep* their car TITLE----NOT SMART!!

People that take possessions to the *bleep* SHOP with the intention of paying them out of *bleep* and getting the items back----NOT SMART!! Just sell them to the *bleep* shop OR get more money by just selling the items on Craig's List or eBay or a yard sale, unless it is an extreme, unpredicitable EMERGENCY.

Anyway, just some random thoughts from a wise granny, whose motto is --
Always spend ALL you Make---Always be BROKE!!

they check your FICO score so they can make sure if they lend you money you pay it back so if you have a poor score you most likely wont pay back the loan

I'm a bit gun shy (understatement) about giving my SSI number to anybody anymore.  About 8 years ago my identity got compromised.  Don't know if any of you remember the write up about Bank of America's data base got hacked. Some hackers wrote a program with a "hook" and threw it into the data base, and I was one that got "hooked" by them.

It's been a nightmare to say the least.  They got every identifying bit of information about me that the bank had. Even my mother's maiden name and SSI#.  I still get calls from business's asking me if I'm buying a computer, etc., online.  I have fraud alerts on all three credit reporting agencies, but still get credit cards in the mail I didn't apply for.

I've changed everything you can possibly think of....bank, cards, etc., but the robbers are getting smarter all the time.  You may be one of the lucky ones that have never been bit, but please remember it can happen to anyone. SHRED everything after you've read it!  Including any offers and yes, some junk mail.  Our information is out there in places you can't even imagine.  It gets sold to third parties....don't think it doesn't.  I don't fill out offers that ask for your CC#......never!  You would be surprised how many things I've declined online still show up in my mailbox.

I have bad credit due to one of us losing a job and getting a new one at al ot less $$ that before.  In top of it, my job decided it that we were going to get a 5% pay cut, better that make lay offs!! so my budget got cut short and we got in deep s....  I have a crappy credit union as a bank because no Bank will give us the chance to open a checking account with them,  even though we would be making Direct Deposits and all the other stuff they require.  Even to cash the FC check last month was a problem, I got to Walmart, they ask for my SS# and refuse to cash the check (some sort of message about credibility of the person) whatever.  I went to the spanish store cashing place near my home and they cashed with no problem.  Did not ask for SS# just for a phone # and charged me 1/2 the fees tha walmart would have charged.

Even to get a job this days they check you credit report and if you have bad credit, then they won't hire you.  How are you suppose to be able to rebuilt your credit if you have no job to pay your bills?, is a question beyond my understanding.

Beware of you give your SS to, I cannot understand a lot of places want it for is scary.  Even with all the bad times, hardly money to feed the family, and no government help even for public school lunches, (we make too much money they say, Huh!! my bank account is in red, I have no money to feed my kids but I make to much money for food stamps, free lunch for my kids at school), go figure that one; I have never gone to get a loan at this places, like paypal, easy cash, whatever, their interest are beyond my pay, I rather go get food at the food bank or feed my kids a glass of water with mac and cheese and ramen noodles and take the bus than go get money at one of those places.

I feel for you.  We had the same situation happen to us aprox 4 years ago. My husband lost his job and it took aprox 1 year to get another job however it was at alot less money. We weren't able to make payments thus hurting our credit.  It has been almost 4 years and we are just getting back on our feet.  Hopefully things will get better for you.  Good luck

Yeah more employers are requesting a credit check for employment now. I can understand a credit bureau like Trans Union for example. My credit was ran to work at Trans Union LLC  in 1997. For 8 yrs as a Data Analyst at TU performing a trace or credit report was always requested to find someone who used false information on an application or applying for employment for a job.  But companies that are offering positions which have nothing to do with handling SS numbers or any personal information is ridiculous. I can understand a background check. It is very sad and becoming harder for people to make it financially these days.  ::)

Ya I remember that, in fact I was with BoA at the time (and still am for that matter). Your absolutely right to be concerned, however you do have an added benefit if you feel like stepping back into the waters. Boa has a program for online work where they will issues a sorta dummy account number for one time use.
Other then that I agree with everything you said especially about email. Get your self a good shred program . personally I like Mcaffee but Norton is just as good.
