Should spanking your children be illegal??? Need Ideas for essay!!

No it should not be illegal, but parents really should avoid it at all costs.  If the spanking is so abusive as to send a kid to the hospital, the adult needs to be arrested immediately and charged with child abuse.   

When I was a kid, my dad used his belt on us.  Six kids.  He thought it would change our behavior, but in my case, it did not.  All it did was make me cry and hurt (pain) for a little bit.

I have two children.  One is 12 and the other just turned 18.  I never spanked either of them and both of them have been just fine.  I find reasoning with them to be more effective. 

The reason I never spanked my kids was because I swore when I was little, that based on my experience of being spanked or whipped, I would never do that to my kids.

Spanking a child should not be illegal. It is the right of the parent to discipline their child in that way. We're talking about spanking, not abuse!

I am adamantly against spanking because I believe it teaches a child that it is okay to hit someone when they don't do what you tell them to do.  That being said, I believe there are times where a spanking is warranted.  My daughter, who is 2, ran out in the road and I spanked her butt.  She didn't go back out in the road after that.  I am a strong believer in time out, and to save the spankings for when a more serious thing occurs.  Believe me, if my daughter was trying to open the oven door or climb up on the stove, I would spank her.  Not for throwing a temper tantrum or being messy.  Does that make sense?

I also believe, though, that the way we were raised stays with us.  My parents spanked me as I was growing up, and they spanked me over minor infractions because it was easier than time out.  So, there are times when my daughter gets on my last nerve and I have to stop myself and go outside for air or a cigarette before I spank her.  I use her pack and play for time outs when this happens.  I discipline myself as much as I do her these days, LOL.

So, no, I don't believe spanking should be illegal.  I also don't believe, though, that it should be the norm.

I agree with that spanking is a parents decision (spanking, not slapping, beating, etc).  Different children react differeently to discipline, and parents should learn what works.  I do not believe in spanking for every little thing, but my children do get spanked on occasion.  And they do not think that hitting  is an answer because they get spanked.  Spanking when appropriate is not abuse, and does not teach children to be violent.  Actually, my kids whould rather get spanked then time out.  They hate time outs.

I think that spanking should not be illeagel. Parents should be able to dicipline their kids in a manner that fits the crime. If a child acts out and other punishments don't seem to work then I think spanking might be needed. If kids know that nothing is going to happen to them no matter what they do then they will keep getting worse and worse until they are uncontroable. I work in a Junior High and the kids know that the worst thing that will happen to them for almost any misbehavior is a detention. The kids don't care about that and so they continue to misbehave and break the rules.

I think a lot of this school behavior stems from parents not having control of their children in their own homes. If spanking helps to teach children dicipline then I think it is OK.

Spanking is for welfare and white trash people.  People who beat and spank children end up having there kids grow up to be jerks, thugs, ect. If they teach there children right, and don't allow them to be around things that cause whiny bratty kids, *COUGH*(*Disney Channel*) they wouldn't act out in the first place.

That is an over-generalization and offensive at that.  Not all kids that are spanked are jerks and thugs.  Whiny bratty kids come from kids that always get their way, not from the Disney Channel or spanking or a lack of being taught right from wrong.  There is a difference between a pat on the butt and abuse.  I've known parents of some adults who never once spanked their kids, and those kids ended up being whiny and bratty and thugs.  I've seen parents who discipline their children by threatening to send them to "the bad kids home" instead of spanking or time out and those kids ended up as seriously damaged adults.  Every child is different.

I never did believe in the "time out" methods of some parents, for #1 it did not work for any of the 3 boys I raised when they were young #2 if a child needs a "spanking" on the *bleep* (please excuse the language if it offends anybody) then the child should get the spanking but of course, it should not be so severe that it is abuse because no child (or individual) deserves to be abused in any way.

No, because spanking can help the child in the long run. Spanking and abuse are two different things I would not alow my kids to run all over me. I see some kids who don't even respect thier elders and are very disrespectful there are alot of kids running around here who should have been spanked as a child.

I think it should be illegal to spank your kids in public. I found out the hard way you can't spank your monkey there.

NO it should not be illegal!     The only thing that I have a problem with is the people who don't know the difference in spanking your child...and BEATING your child!    There is a big difference!
