Caramel Apples
« on: October 03, 2010, 08:21:49 pm »
Ingredients
1 1/2 tbsp. butter
1 1/2 cups light brown sugar
6 tbsp. water
Popsicle sticks
8 to 10 apples (McIntoshes work well)
X
Instructions
Melt the butter in a saucepan. Add the brown sugar and water. Stir until it has a smooth consistency.

Gently bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 3 minutes, until the pan's sides get steamy and the mixture is thin but somewhat sticky. Remove from heat.

Pierce the center of each apple with a Popsicle stick, then swirl in the caramel syrup until coated. Place apples on a greased cookie sheet to harden. Refrigerate for at least 1 to 2 hours. Serves 8 to 10.

this is the same recipe my grandma (RIP) used to use to make use caramel apples every halloween. :(
she would swirl to coat them, and then some she would coat with melted peanut butter and roll in chopped chocolate chips. my favorite one was her starwberry cheesecake apples, which she would dust with very fine graham crakcer crumbs and then would drizzled with melted vanilla chips that she flavored with strawberry syrup. so good and waaay cheaper than the rocky  mountain chocolate factory's $6 apples! :)

mmm, love caramel apples! especially the homemade
kind, like you can find at fall festivals. the pre-packaged
ones just never taste the same...

i've only tried making caramel once, and failed miserably!
it never got smooth, just stayed grainy and kinda burnt
to the bottom of the pot. i was pretty disappointed.

but practice makes perfect. i've been looking for a good
party appetizer, so this might just be it
[ we all have a place in history. mine is in the clouds. ]

Thank you for the recipe, I never made carmel apples but your recipe looks so easy, I'm going to try it.
Will post again after I make them.

This is my favorite caramel recipe.  We cut our apples into wedges and us the caramel as a dip.

48 caramels
1 stick oleo
1 can sweetened condensed milk

Melt together.

It keeps very well in the refrigerator.  It will be fairly firm when cold, so we just spoon out what we want into a microwavable bowl and heat it up then dip our apple wedges.
