Favorite Holiday Memory:
My favorite holiday memory is the Christmas I spent with my dad the last year he was alive. Dad had dementia and was often cranky and irritable, but somehow Christmas changed that. He always loved Christmas, and for many years prior to his illness he decorated our family home inside and out. (I guess I picked that up from him since that is exactly what I do with my own home.) That year he and mom came for Christmas dinner, and he was in such a good mood. He enjoyed the meal, noticed and commented on the decorations, and generally enjoyed himself the whole day. That was his last Christmas. He died in early December the following year. I feel so grateful that I was able to make his last favorite holiday a special one for him.
Driving to my grandmother's house and waking on Xmas morning to discover a bike under the tree even though I knew we didn't drive out there with a bike in the car. Didn't realize dad had ordered it from a store and picked it up when we got to my grandmother's house.
One that comes to mind is a couple years ago, I was decorating the front of my home outside and parts of the lawn. I worked really hard setting everything up and trying to make it look nice. When I was finally finished, I plugged all the lights in and went out into the street to get a good look. Went inside to get everyone to come outside and see it, and my brother just had to have a hot dog first. He started the microwave, and all the lights went out. The circuit breaker tripped, and that's how I found out my home didn't have a very good capacity for things like that. Ended up having to unplug some of the lights (and turn off the lights each time we needed to use the microwave). Have only put very small amount of lights out in the years since.
There have been so many great holiday memories that it is hard to single out just one! I guess my latest favorite holiday memory is seeing our youngest grandchild experience Christmas last year. She was so excited when she came into the room to see what Santa had left her that all she could do was stare! It was precious!! Then she got busy opening presents and the celebrating began! Priceless memories!!
