Intolerance and being Hypocritical
« on: September 24, 2010, 06:22:09 pm »
My girlfriend and I was having a discussion the other day about whether, us being totally intolerant towards people who are intolerant of others lifestyles, when those lifestyles do not victimize anyone in any way, makes us hypocrites.

Whatcha think?

Depends on what you mean when you say you are intolerant of them.

There are people who I consistently bash because their attitudes and actions disgust me, and I would let them know in a heartbeat how I feel about them.  Its a tough thing, really.

Well, basically, I feel like everyone is entitled to their personal morals and should govern their own lives accordingly, however, when they begin trying to force everyone else, who has a different moral standard, but are not harming anyone by them, to convert to their standards, they are wrong and there should be a zero tolerance attitude, by all, against such arrogance.

lol makes my brain hurt too.

I guess what I mean is, everyone has the right to their own beliefs, unless, practicing those beliefs infringe on an others right to practice their beliefs.

I agree with that. But I will say this, if a question is posed (such as the homosexuality thread) then each person expressing their belief in their answer, has a right to express it. There will definitely be disagreement but their answer should be tolerated as well.

There does become a sticky line when political issues are at hand that are controversial and are regarded as moral issues.

People don't want their moral beliefs infringed upon, by other people and especially government. So for example when the issue of abortion comes up, what will the doctor who is pro life vote for when his/her right to refuse to do abortions is in danger of being taken away?

I think politics is where the infringement gets the most sticky, but again if someone believes a certain way and that want that belief represented by their governing powers, they have the right to vote in the direction they want.

This kind of goes with your other post about democracy too. It's hard to have a nation full of such diversity in race, culture, religion, etc....I think it's actually a miracle we have not had more *bleep* wars amongst ourselves.

What happens, too, are the ones that feel their own beliefs are more superior than other's beliefs and so, they bash their beliefs or try to intimidate them because they believe different.  To me, that's an infringement as well.  (I feel I'm talking in circles, lol...)

I feel ya JC however, in my desire to be fair and tolerant of others beliefs I sometimes wonder if some of them are actually being superioristic(yeah some of them are) or are they just being passionate and, like me, dont always have the linguistic tools to illustrate their intent effectively?

How do you feel about yourself? Do you think you were being hypocritical? I try not to be hypocritical but if someone asks my opinion about themselves I will give them an honest answer. I don't like being judged so I try my best to stay away from that.
