Be Prepared for a Fire
« on: September 02, 2010, 12:08:19 pm »
Kids ages 5 and younger are twice as likely to die in a residential fire because it’s harder for them to escape on their own.  It’s critical to have a smoke alarm on every floor, including the basement as well as outside and inside every bedroom.  Test them monthly.  You should also have a multipurpose fire extinguisher for every 600 square feet of living space.  When using an extinguisher, remember PASS:

Pull the pin
Aim at the base of the fire
Squeeze or press the handle
Sweep from side to side until it goes out.

my fiance's aunt &uncle are those super-practical-
christmas-gift-givers. like, so practical that you wonder
if they just went around their cabinets collecting all
the stuff they've never used and wrapped it up...

anyway! they gave us a fire extinguisher one year
and we chuckled about it, but we weren't laughing
when our neighbor fell asleep one night with a pot
boiling on her stove and caught her kitchen on fire!
we smelled smoke and our little extinguisher saved
the day

yay stories...
[ we all have a place in history. mine is in the clouds. ]

Great thinking on making this topic and post, BK. Not too long ago I showed my 6 year old grandson what to do with the extinguishers I have in my house. Of course, I also told him they were NOT to ever be played with or handed to his 3 year old sister. ;) I can only imagine that scenario.......

Here where I live a family of 4 just die from a fire house . There was two young kids ages 2 and 4. The mom was 35 and the grandpa was in his 70. It was a sad day here in ky. They still don't know what cause the house fire. Please always talk to your family about a fire plan to get out safe.

Other hints on how to prevent house and motor vehicles fires: Buy a thermometer and check the temperature inside your house or motor vehicle...if it gets to hot, open the windows immediately. Do not wait until the fire extinguisher works...have some gallons or buckets of water to throw at the fire. It works faster than anything else!
