payout by check
« on: February 08, 2008, 08:51:56 pm »
hi, i'm new. i'm going to have to get a check for my money.

i was wondering-

do i have to be in certain states to cash the check? or can i cash it at any bank?
i'm worried that i'm going to get my check and not be able to cash it due to some weird circumstance.
are there any rules for getting paid by check?

thank you for any help.

I have heard that you can go to any Check Cashing place. However I would recomend the easyest way it to get a Paypal account and have your money sent electronicly there.  Then from paypal to your bank account if you have one.  There is no charge for using Paypal and the money comes faster and easyer then waiting for a check in the mail.  Pluss there are no fees taken out like as if you went to a check cashing place. If you look at some of the oter posts some people have some sort of card that the money gets deposited in to.  So Read some of the other posts.

I actually just dealt with this, I had to take it to three different check cashing places before it got cashed, some of them won't verify through a website (which EZPay does, and FC uses EZPay for checks) because of all of the crazy internet scams.  However, without much stress and a little help from google, problem solved.  I just googled a couple check cashing places, and called ahead to see if they would do it.  First place I called (after I went to three different ones) did it with no problem.  He actually told me he had seen a few other people bring in FC checks.  I thought that was cool, three people in my area making cash with FC!!  Go FC!! lol

I have since switched to paypal, just easier to do..

And how much of your check did you have to pay to get it cashed at a check cashing place?

If you don't have a bank account, it can be challenging to get a check cashed.

i have a bank account, it's just i can't use it to verify a paypal (due to personal reasons/preferences). so i'm going to have to get a check in the mail. i'm just worried that i won't be able to cash it due to some silly reason. so i can just bring it to my bank and cash it, no questions asked?

Yes, if you have an account at that bank -- they will cash out without hesitation.

not having a bank acoount in these times is like not having a phone.

you wont die not having them... but it makes life so much easier..

why would you NOT want one?

It's anecdotal, but I know a number of people who simply wish to avoid being in electronic databases.
I know someone else who was paying child support religiously, in cash, and had his ex report him for non-payment.  Without documentation for the payments, he was unable to prevent the court from freezing his bank accounts and taking all of the money on deposit.  He no longer uses bank accounts as a result.
If you have a negative mark against your name/SSN in ChexSystems, you will be unable to open an account at most institutions.  It's extraordinarily easy to get a negative mark and extraordinarily difficult to get it removed, even if it's not justified - they tend to "shoot first, ask questions later".
Similarly, if you have poor credit, many institutions will decline to give you an account.
Also keep in mind that people who work at banks are human beings and bring with them personal prejudices.  In some cases, you may be turned down because the bank rep doesn't like the color of your skin or your social strata.

In short, it's a pretty short-sighted view to assume that it's easy to get a bank account.  Depending on all kinds of factors, some outside your control, it can be very challenging or impossible.

shortsighted?

its very short sighted for your friend to attempt living "on the fringe" do to some bad decisions your friend made in the past.

while he can attempt to buck the system, how much easier is it to walk into a bank and cash a simple check verses going all over town trying to cash it?

i cant tell you just how many mistakes... and damn stupid ones sometimes... that i've made, but the answer is never to "skirt" your problems.

i think you would agree with that.

I never said it was a friend, nor do I think that paying child support on-time and in cash is a bad decision.  Misguided, but his heart was definitely in the right place.  I put the blame on the ex for being greedy and litigious.

The entire point is that some people DO NOT HAVE THE OPTION to just "walk into a bank" and cash the check.  Did you even read my post?  It has nothing to do with "skirting" problems.

Personally, I think owning up to one's problems is a good life strategy, but it's not my place to tell anyone else how to live.  Nor does that really have anything to do with the topic at hand...
