Roadhouse Tunes
« on: August 23, 2010, 03:16:10 pm »
I've got a large collection of music and I'm trying to create different playlists depending upon my mood as well as the audience I'm playing for... Some parties have me bring over my netbook and "Music Flask" external hard-drive to run DJ for them.

Right now I'm trying to compose a playlist with what I'd consider to be roadhouse-style music. And I'm looking for some suggestions from my FC peeps. Basically looking for songs that are bluesey rock, up-beat country hony tonk, rockabilly and the even more hyper psychabilly rock, etc. Things that you'd associate with a rough bikers bar or a rockin' honky tonk. Probably things from the 60's-70's but can include songs from other eras as well. I'd mostly like songs (and artists that play them), but also certain artists just ooze roadhouse songs so listing the artist is fine too.

Some of what I have so far:
Bob Segar
George Thorogood
Johnny Cash
The Rolling Stones
"Cold Hard B*tch", "Are You Gonna be My Girl?" - Jet
"Drowning (Face Down)" - Saving Abel
"All Summer Long", "Only God Knows Why" - Kid Rock
"Something to Believe In" - Poison
"Astro", "One More Cup of Coffee", "Seven Nation Army" - The White Stripes
"Hard to Handle", "Jealous Again", "Kickin' My Heart Around" - The Black Crowes
"Rock Me", "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" - Great White
"Wanted Dead or Alive", "Blaze of Glory", "It's My Life", "Dry County" - Bon Jovi
"I Can See Clearly Now" - Johnny Nash
"Mean old World" - Eric Clapton and Duane Allman
"Cocaine", "Sweet Home Chicago", "Before You Accuse Me" - Eric Clapton
"Hoochie Coochie Man" - Muddy Waters (and a number of covers like E. Clapton, Jeff Healey Band, BB King)
"Galaxy 500", "Loco Gringos Like a Party", "Like a Rocket", "Suicide Doors" - Reverand Horton Heat
"I'll Never Smoke Weed with Willie Again" - Toby Keith (and Willie Nelson)
"It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere" - Alan Jackson (and Jimmy Buffet)
"Cheeseburger in Paradise", "Margaritaville", "Why Don't we Get Drunk and Screw", "Pencil Thin Mustache" - Jimmy Buffett

Gotta throw in a little AC-DC while you're at it ("Shook Me All Night Long", "Back in Black", "Highway To Hell"), Aerosmith ("Dude [Looks Like a Lady]", "Crazy", 'Sweet Emotion" - pretty much anything), maybe a little Def Leopard ("Love Bites", "Pour Some Sugar On Me")

Some of these are 80's (or 90's), but still has that roadhouse feel to me.

Yes! I love all those suggestions! Esp. some of those one-hit-wonders... those you tend to forget until you hear it. I also decomposed Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" and am adding "Sweet Home Alabama" - Lynard Skynard and "Werewolves of London" - Warren Zevon. Definitely AC-DC; I'll be putting in a few of those. I'm also going to go through Eagles and put in a few of theirs: "7 Bridges Road", "Hotel California", "Desperado", "Life in the Fast Lane"... The Sabbath reminded me of some other metal bands of the 70s / 80s: "Breakin' the Law", "Nightcrawler", "You've Got Another Thing Coming" - Judas Priest; "Mother" - Danzig; "Ace of Spades" - Motorhead; "Symphony of Distruction" - Megadeath.

As you can see, I'm more of the rock kind of guy, but if I may use this at parties, I'm going to want to add a little more country (honky tonk, western swing, and maybe a little bluegrass) esp here in MN. But I'm not so good coming up with those... "Long Neck Bottle" - Garth Brooks; "Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox" - Joe Diffie... Others? (That's fine if your like me and can only think of rock... I'd like those too!)
