Bargain Shopping
« on: August 11, 2010, 04:03:27 am »
I am very new with this site, however considering the fact that I quite enjoy writing, I would like to participate in the forum.  This I believe is the off-topic area, and if that is correct then I'm in the right place.  You see I would like to talk about something different, like some of the things I find, well, let's just say things I find interesting and that may also be interesting to others.  So, here we go.

I have been well trained by my wife to be a bargain shopper.  She just didn't know what she was creating.  You see, I have grown to love shopping for bargains, and I've come to know that bargains are waiting to be found at Flea Markets.  I have been known to spend hours looking at flea markets for different items. Different vendors set up their products in a central location so that consumers can spend their time walking around and see the new and used items available for sale. You never know what you will come across at a flea market. There are plenty of new and used items as well as home made crafts and clothing to choose from.  I even know a guy who once baught a car at a flea market!  Since I've become sort of an expert on flea markets I thought I'd offer a little guide or just a few suggestions for others to consider when shopping for bargains, because since the economy has become so bad there are many more people out there looking for bargains now than there were just a few years ago.  So, to be a really successful bargain shopper here are a few tips to consider.

To help make your day at the flea market the best it can be plan for the day. Most flea markets are outdoors so you may want some sunscreen and a hat. Others are inside so make sure you find out ahead of time. You don’t want to spend the day carrying around the items you purchased so make sure you take along a bag or a cart. There are some very inexpensive carts that fold up and fit into the trunk of your car.

Make sure you wear good walking shoes too so you won’t have to end your daily early due to tired feet. A good tip to help if you do get tired walking is to walk to the very end of the vendors and work your way forward. This way you will have the heaviest load from items you have purchased when you are nearest your vehicle. Keep in mind that most people start at the entrance of the flea market so if you start at the back you will be able to see many items before too many other people do.

Most flea markets are offered on the weekends but some of them do take place on weekdays as well. The number of other people looking around is generally lower during the week but then so is the number of vendors. It is really a toss up about when is the best time of day to make a deal at a flea market. It is perfectly acceptable to try to get the price lowered down from what the vendor is asking for it.

By going to a flea market first thing in the morning you are likely to be able to take advantage of the selection before everyone else has. This is the best solution if there are particular items you are interested in finding. Yet many people claim they have a harder time getting the seller to negotiate the prices when they purchase early in the morning.

By the end of the day though most vendors are very willing to lower the prices on the items they have remaining. They definitely don’t want to have to pack up any more stuff at the end of the day than they absolutely have to. If you have a particular item in mind and you can wait until the end of the day you will get a better price. You also run the risk of someone else snatching it up though if it is a one of a kind item.

There are different ways to negotiate the price of any given item. You can ask the vendor what the lowest price is that they will take for a given it. You can also offer to pay a certain price and see if they will take you up on the offer. If you want to offer $10 then have that money in your hand for them to see. Seeing the money will often entice them to take the money.

I have found it is always worth my time to look around though because I may find the vendor in the next aisle has the same item for $10 less. If I am going to go back to check on an item with a particular vendor I write down their location because by the end of the day it can be difficult to remember who is located where.

I love bargain shopping but I don't have a need to buy things anymore.  When I do need something I will shop around to get the cheapest price.  I used to do flea markets and may have a yard sale occasionally.  What I hate is when people think they can get away with paying nothing.  Sometimes people wanted to offer me a $1 when an item is worth way more.  I'm sorry I know people are hurting but come on people.  I'd rather throw the item away than to sell it to some greedy *bleep* for $1.

Once I was selling at a flea market and a vendor next to me was selling nice antique dishes.  A guy offered him like $5 for the set ( a lot of dishes).  These dishes were worth more than $5.  Well the vendor got so mad (I guess from dealing with cheap, greedy people all day) that he started breaking the dishes.  He said he'd rather smash the dishes than sell them.  I know how he felt.  I think he was probably getting out of the flea market business any way.  The other vendors stopped him before he smashed all of them and he actually gave us some of his dishes.  We tried selling the dishes other places and couldn't sell them lol!  I think we just gave them to Goodwill or something.

My wife doesn't like to bargain shop and I really wish she would. She doesn't like used stuff because she thinks it's dirty. I guess some of it is... I don't know what to do to change her mind.

Yes some things people sell is dirty.  I've never sold anything dirty.   I know myself and a lot of others clean up items to sell because we know people don't like to buy dirty items.  I'm pretty sure thrift stores clean a lot of the products before they put them on the shelf.  Also you can get new items at flea markets and thrift stores too it's not all used.

I do too. My dad is having a yard sale saturday and I'm putting some stuff in. My boyfriend bought a bassinet and a mobile that we'll never use again and we have a ton of baby clothes my daughter has outgrown.

I agree that some shoppers are just very greedy and try to cheat the seller. But wouldn't it be better to get at least a little bit of money for something, rather than throw it away and not get anything?
